TEACHERS' MEETING. A Successful Monthly Session at Harmony. The teachers' meeting held at Har mony last Saturday was one of the most successful and entertaining recently held in this count. ' The weather, the people, the teachers and ths beautiful surroundings all har monized. Superintendent N. W. Rowland, the president of the meetings, is the right man in the right place affable, poliie and skillful as a presiding officer. The exercises were begun by singing "Yield Not to Temptation," with Mits Williams, of Parkplace, at Use organ Prof. Gray, principal of Parkplace, displayed rare ability and presented many new and interesting thoughts upon ... r, I I r rtl t ie "Revolutionary Period of Our His , torp.'V HU discourse held the UntlL. vided attention of the wetting. The paper read by MUs Emma Sturcli ler, of Clackamas, on "Priniaiy Ueogra phy and llOW to leach It' SllOWeU mat she fully understood the subject, and it wan well received. Prof. Rutherford, of Redlaiid, prt-sent-ed some moit excellent thougliiB on "Morals of the Public Schools." Mr. Rutherford is a very thoughtful and earncbt speaker. Among other thing, he thought religion Bhould be taught in the public schools, which opinion was concurred in by Mrs. Rinearson and others. 0. II. Bvlund doubted the pro priety of such a course, and said that while he was a Presbyterian of Presby terian antecedents and entertained great respect and veneration for the chuich and devotion to the creed, yet he re garded the common tchool as the great neutral ground upon which all seuts, creeds beliefs or unbeliefs met in a inn tu tl truce. Jew and Oetitile, Romaniai and Proteetunt, saint, tinner and iiifiiiul should leuve their religious differences behind when they enter the public school. Mr. Pylund further emphasized hisobjoclion by stating that all churche. hud learned and skilled priests and preachers tfhosa business it is to ex pound the gospel of Christ to the people, that he inferred that the teligiou under - discussion wus the Christian religion, that the teacher would have to be a Bible scholar with ability to interpret the scriptures, that he would not want tiny and every school teacher to inter pret the diuue word for his children, i hat he wanted his pastor to do that; that ic would be as presumptuous for the average teacher to undertake to teach religion In the public schools as it would lor the average preacher to attempt to .each the common school branches frm the pulpit. Finally and lastly, he said, the teaching of sectarian religion in the public schools was forbidden by the law , .if the land. Mist Fannie Porter receives much praise from all the teachers for the ex cellent manner in which she performs the duties of secretary for all these these teachers' meetings. It was decided to hold the next meet ing at Kedland. The good people of Harmony were kind to the teachers, conveying them to and from Milwaukie, and the noon lunch which tbey served the teachers was superlative. The school house was - crowded to its (uncapacity with visitors. There were 29 teachers present. On motion of 0. H. Byland, a com mittee was appointed to dralt resolu tions of respect to the memory of 0. E. Menier and Miss Ida Francis, deceased members of the association. 0. II. Byland.
