Jefferson advocated the abolition of the
aristocratic system of ptiinomtere and
entail, and he advocated the freedom of
religion. Thee propositions were re
eeived with honor and alarm by the
majority and by established society.
They were looked upon as destructive
and he was denounced as an enemy, but
in a very brief time-the men who advo
cated these reforms constituted the ma
jority and controlled the government.
The idea that men are equal and that

from the consent of the governed wa
born of the minority, was ridiculed and
denounced and its advocacy was even
made a crime, but in time its advocates
formel the majority and shaped the
policy of the government.
During the administration of John
A lams the tnnjority which was then in
power favored strong centralized govern
ment and invested the presidont with
powers that were destructive of liberty.
Hamilton, speaking for the majority,
laid: "The people cannot be trusted.
You must have great centralized power,
You must curb the liberties of the peo
pie. Limited monarchy bottomed on
corruption, such as England has, is the
best government, Let the government
help the rich and trust to the rich to
help the poor. Hug the shore; follow
the customs of the piiBt."
Jefferson, who spoke for the minority,
declared that the people could be trust
ed. He said: "Yonder is the ocean of
freedom, calm and deep. Steer the chip
of Btate out up n it and ride in safety.
keep away from the dangerous shoals
and rocks near the shore. Keep away
from the dangerous dehria which the
ages of tmperetition, tyrnnny and op
piession have d poi-itcd there. Take
your longitude and latitude from the
sun and from the never-changing stars
and steer tonard the pirt of liberty and
the riuhts of humanity."
It was the higher thought which pro
claimed that church and Btute should be
separated, and that the people of differ
ent religions, as well as of different na
tionalitits, should live peaceably and
harmoniously in the same country, nei
ther interfering with the other and all
alike devoted to free institutions, and
as a result we have what the world never
saw before not only all nationalities,
