For the first time in the history of
Minnesota as a stale the republican
candidate for governor is defeated.
Judge Lind, democrat, having 20,000
majority.
"TiricitE arc three kinds of poor God's
poor, the devil's poor and poor devils,"
bo said the Doctor of Divinity Driver in
the last legislature. Salem Independ
ent. We can't say that he belongs to either
the first or the last mentioned class.
Tub Enterprise seems grieved because
the Courier-Herald is getting a goodly
number of Us subscribers. Some re
publicans do not take republican papers
simply because they are republicans,
But want to know what is going on in
the community.
Mr. Roosevklt in a speech made since
the election, said: "It is by so doing
that I can best show my appreciation
of the support given me by the inde
pendents and democrats who have them
selves put the welfare of the state first."
This shows that the Rough Rider owes
his election to the democaats and inde
pendents.
The Enterprise is trying to argue that
the higher the tariff the better. Why
don't it take its cue from the Oregonian,
which it tries to follow in other respects,
and advocate free trade as that paper
does. The republican administration
wants high protection in the U. S. and
"open door" or free trade in the Phil
ippines. How about that?
Tiikrb is an item going the rounds of
the press to the effect that the proper
way to keep apples in winter is to wrap
them in old newspapers so as to exclude
the air. The newspaper however, must
be one on which the subscription has
been paid, otherwise dampness result
ing from what is "dew" may cauee the
fruit to spoil. (
Extract from the speech of C.
D. Latourette, candidate for
mayor.
"There is not a city in the
Northwest with a more solid
foundation, or a better prospect of
future greatness, than Oregon
City. We are ail proud of the
fact; and when increasing pros
perity stimulates and quickens the
demand for our staple manufac
tures we should see a correspond
ing increase in wages."
Extracts from the speech of C.
D. Latourette, in accepting the
nomination ot mayor, at the Inde
pendent Citizens Convention:
"In finance, we should favor a
public policy conservative, but not
niggardly, tending to advance and
upbuild the material interests of
all parts of the city."
"In morals, encouragement
should be given to harmless amuse
ments for the entertainment of
our people at home, with proper
safe-guards for the protection of
our youth against pernicious habits
and immoral practices."
