J1ASON5 CELEBRATE.
The Cemi-Centenulal Celebration of
Multnomah Lodge a Notable. -
-:"; ':,',' Eventt '
The semi-centennial celebra tion of
the anniversary of Multnomah Lodge,
No. 1, A. F. & A. M., was a matter of
extraotdinary interest in the history of
Oregon, as well as the entire Pacific
coast. Last Monday was a gala day in'
the history of the Oregon City Blue lodge
organized under the first charter, is
sued West of the Missouri river and or
ganized on the 11th day of September,
1348. It marked a half centurv of prog
ress in the history of Masonic growth
and the progress of civilization on the
Pacific coast, with the virtual begin
ning made at Oregon City 60 yeara ago.
Multnomah Lodge was organized un
der a charter granted by the grapd lodge
of Missouri in the year 1846. .
In 1847, Joseph Kellogg, in company
with bis father, Orin Kellogg, started on
his journey across the plains bearing
the charter. In September, 1848, all
arrangements were completed for the
institution of the lodge, and on the 11th
of that month, it is believed in the
building now called the Oriental Hotel,
the institution was consummated. On
the same evening one new member was
iniiiaied, Ohris Taylor. For a period of
about ten years meetings were held and
the lodge met where it was organized.
From about 1848 till the spring of 1860,
the lodge-room was in Dt. Steel's drug
store building, which was situated on
ground now covered by the mills of the
Oregou City Manufacturing Company.
When the building was burned, ar
rangement were made for holding
meetings in the building of Charles Al
bright, sr., over the present meat mar
ket, which continued till the erection,
in 1861, of the first hall of the lodge,
practically on ihe site of its present hall.
The lodge was now comfortably situ
ated in its own quarters but was des
tined to lose them, for on January 9,
1885, this building also burned. After
this for a period of one year, or until
February 22, 1886, the lodge met in the
building owned by the local lodge I. O.
O. F., when their present building was
completed, and is still occupied as a
lodge room,
Many pioneer Masons were in attend
ance at the celebration Monday even
ing,' who had worked hand in hand to
gether to build up and advance the civ
ilization of Oregon. These men, too,
had been leaders in the van of civiliza
tion, and they could point with pride
to the achievements of a half century,
At 7:30 the local and visiting Masons
aesembledin the lodge room at 7:30,
whioh was tastily decorated. The raw
hide, brass nailed trunk, in which Cap
tain Kellogg carried the charter across
plains, had a prominent place. Ad
dresses were made by Captain George
fease and f . belling, ol Portland ; Cap
tain J. T. Apptrson, Major Thomas
Charman, O W. Ganong, of Oregon
City, and William Barlow, of Bailow.
At a p. m., the assembled Masons
marched in a body to Weinhard's hall.
