Edward Page Gaston, of Chicago, who
was one of the prominent lecturers at
the Chautauqua Assembly in 1897, has
been presented with a silk flag by Pres
ident McKinley. He was to leave Mon
day on a trip to cover several years,
and will continue original investigations
on the origin of ancient man. Ho was
a member of the Hemenway expedi
tion into the biuied cities and cliff
dwellings of Arizona and New Mexico
in 1888, and will now collect additional
material from the ruins of the Tigris
Euphrates basin and other fields of
archaeology in the old world.

Great is Oregon 1 The battleship Or
egon is the greatest fighting machine
afloat, and the Oregon horse, Chehalis,
is throwing dust in t'lie eyes of the fast

The Oregon City volunteers are not
having a picnic at Manilla by any
means, according to the letters recently
received in this city. They have to eat
hard government rations, and would be
entirely without variety of food and lux
uries, had not Oregon Oity people made
liberal donations for their benefit.
Dull garrison duty at Cavite is no doubt
becoming irksome beneath a hot tropi
cal sun, as they evidently have not had
an opportunity to engage in active bat
tie. There is no doubt but what they
would distinguish themselves with valor
and honor, if given an opportunity.
HARVEST NOTES.
Reports From Farmers Concerning
Crop Yields, etc.
O. E. Young, of Marquam, went over
to Logan Saturday to take charge of
J. M. Tracy's new thresher engine.
Mr. Young had just completed thresh
ing his wheat, which yielded 23 bushel
to the acre. He expects his oats to yield
56 bushels to the acre. The yield of
grain is not coming up to expectations
in that neighborhood.
John D. Daly, of Macksburg, was in
town Saturday, and reports the average
yield of wheat in that locality, to be
about 15 bushel to the acre. Mr. Daly's
fall wheat, however, when threshed,
measured 16' bushel to the acre.
W. M. Stone, of Viola, was in the city
Saturday, and states that farmers have
not yet begun threshing in that neigh
borhood. On account of the ravages of
the bugs and worms, it is not believed
that the yield will be up to the usual
standard.
Deputy County Recorder Ed Dedman
reports that crops are short in the vi
cinity of Clackamas. Wheat is aver
aging about 15 bushels to the acre, and
oats 20.
Deputy Sheriff Isom has returned
from a trip over the county, and reports
the wheat yield short.
J. L. Waldron, of New Era precinct,
reports that wheat is only yielding
about 10 bushel per acre in his imme
diate neighborhood.
Josi Brothers, who live near town, re
port a yield of 23 bushels to the acre.
Postmaster G. A. Schuebel, of Shu-
bel, states that no threshing has yet
been done in his immediate neighbor
hood, but tho crop will be short The
Hessian ily and green rtphis did con
siderable damage to the wheat, extract
ing tho juices from the stalk. He states
that hops look splendid, and the fruit
prospect is good, although apples are
falling off the trees to a considerable ex
tent.
Lawrence Hornschuch, of Beaver
creek, threshed his oats this week,
which yielded 30 bushel to the acre.
F. R. Andrews, of Maplo Shade farm,
had his grain threshed this week.
His oats yielded 50 bushel to the acre,
and his spring wheat from 10 to 18
bushel to tho acre.
Reports from various sections of the
county, indicates a general shotage in
the whout yield duo to the ravages of
tho aphis. However, tho yield will not
fall far short of other years, a small
crop being more apparent than real.
as farmers expected an unusual bounti
ful crop this season. Fruit and hops,
in quantity and quality will exceed anv
former season in Clackamas county,
