A meeting of Clackamas County Cen tral Democrat Committee, will be held at Pope's hall on Saturday, February 19, at 2 p.m., for the purpose of fixing the date for the county convention, appor tioning delegates to -the same and to transact such other business as may come before the meeting. J. J. Cookk, Chairman. A. VV. Ciikney, Secretary. AVk notioi by the proceedings of the populist stale central committee, at its meeting held in Portland on the 19ih, that Sir. U'Hcii's motion to change ihe date of holding the state convention (which had been adopted by the demo crats and silver republicans) was defeat ed by a vote of 19 to 8. The negative ballots were cast by U'Ken.who had five proxies besides his own vote, Sena tor Holt of Jackson and Henry Denlinger of Lincoln. Virtually only three of the twenty who took part in the committee's deliberations were in favor of thwarting a compact union of the silver-reform forces. Jacksonville Times. Thk state treasury is full of money some half a million dollars being piled l p there, and the state will soon header the varioiiscounties for some state taxes With all this money the jieople are forced to pay interest on stale warrants because the legislature failed to make ap preprint ions, and the money is left to fatten the state treasurer and Mr. Hush's bank in Salem. Okkgon City, Jan. 31, 1898. From Oregonian January 20th : "The contention is that the present plight ot silver is due to descrimination of law J that an act of congress declaring the monetary standard to be 412j grains of silver as well as 2'i.2i grains of gold will restore silver to its old value It is a strange misconception and it is a hard one to answer, etc." He there goes on to say that silver men go on faith for their opinions, like people do for their leligion, and it is no more use to submit to them evidence or reason, than to argue the infallibility of the Pope to a Scotch covenanter, etc. They cannot be convinced because they will no be. Here the editor contra dicts himself in one short paragraph. He tells us that people take their re j ligious on faith without evidence, and that the Scotch covenanters have no faith to receive the infallibility of the Pope. Either he must claim the Pope to be infallible proved by evidence which is rejected, or he must admit that the proof for infallibility is not strong enough to convince a covenanter. So that a covenater wants reason for his religion which makes the editor contradict himself. But we can tell the editor that the evidence of the Pope's infallibility is about on a par with evidence advanced by the Oregonian for the gold standard. It is no use to brag of the support of history and science without facts, which are in favor of the silver argument. .Let the Oregonian explain why there never was any serious difference in the value of gold and silver for over two centuries, while any of the leading countries were minting both, free, at a raiio, and since India dropped the free mintage, there has been a diversion of over fifty per cent. No wonder the Oregonian finds it hard to convince Bilver men, it must do more than boast of history and science, it must use them to convince its opponents, hut this would not do; every fact of history and economic science proves the stability of the world's values on a bimetallic basis and the hmt four year's f xperionoo of two separate standards is enough to satisfy most people with the gold stand ard.
