Molalla slowly continues to improve
notwithstanding hard times and the long
looked for McKinley prosperity..
Frank Kayler is building a neat cottage
on his lot in the Moody addition to our
village. John Alexander is finishing
his residence. V. P. Herman has
moved to town and is occupying his new
barn as a residence until he can build a
house. The carpenters are at work on
the old si hool house that now belongs
to Mis. Moody and are making a
residence of the same; the Rev. Molloy
will live in it. James King, our black
smith, has added a new picket and board
fence to his many improvements this
summer. Looks as though there might
be a wedding in that end ot town some
time soon.
Our school is progressing finely and is
well attended. '
Albert Engle is with us again after
nnderg6inii a very serious surgical oper
ation recently at ihe Gladstone hospital.
He speaks very highly of the attention
that he received while there.
Fay Moody is home again after rail
roading, while in die vacinity ot Bainier .
He dosen't seem to fancy that portion ol
the county.
There was some excitement here for
awhile last Sunday morning. Son.e one
in passing Maekrell's harness shop
noticed that a window glas.in each of
his front windows was broken. Mr.
Mackrell is away visiting his parents
near Astoria and it was thought that
burglars had been at work, but upon
further investigation it was found that
Luther Fox had carelessly place ! ins
wheel in such a uosition that one of the
handle bars went through the glass,
while Uncle Sam No. 2 got frisky and
accidently shied a rock through the
other one.
Miss Mertie Eby has gone to Portland
to have her eyes treated.
Mrs. 0. W. Robbins was called to the
home of her mother near Corvallis by
the dangerous illness of her sister.
E. P. Carter has moved his family to
Molalja and has goi e to Phenix, Ariz.,
he is in hopes that the change of climate
may benefit his health, which has been
failing rapidly for the past year.
Levi Bobbins has moved to town to
spend the winter.
Uncle Jake Harless is still at work on
his ledge in the vicinity of Ogle Creek.
He is highly encouraged the way in is
showing up so far. It is of a chalky
formation and carries considerable free
gold. Holt and Wheeler haw moved
from their ledge on Henline Creek to a
ledge that they have located on Gold
creek. It is in the vicinity f the old
Foley mine that was located years ago.
There is a smelter betna elected on Gold
creek near Holt and Whee.er'smine that
will work all the ore that they will
produce.' They are pn paring to spend
the winter there. There was a party of
some six or more pushed through here
recently to placer mine on the upper
Molalla; they were outfitted by Mason
Ehrman & Co. of Portland and went
prepared to stay awhile. ltnsoll and
1'elkey are at work on their Ogh Creek
mines doing assessment work.
Some of our Molalla hoys have taken
the Klondike fever but will not start
until spring.
There has been several fine deer killed
on the Molalla recently. Jinks McCown
shot a large fat buck in the river a few
davs atro. Several bear have been seen
around here this fall but oniy two have
been killed so far.
Farmers are about through w ith their
fall sowing of wheat in this region. A
large acreage fas oeen pin in.
Old Father Dibble was dangerously
ill when last heard from.
F. C. Perrv is mourning the absence
of his pet fox again. Uncle Billy s
hounds failed to locate Mr. Fox this
time so in the future he will visit hen
roosts in style consistent with a leather
collar and about a foot of dog chain.
Wisley Uiggs, who livesin the vicinity
of Mackshnrg, met with a painful ac
cident hile hunting in the mountains
recently. He fired at adeer when his
gun burst lacerating the inside of his
left hand terribly, tearing the fiesh from
the inside of his hand ani l fingers, cause 1
by overloading Jus cartridges with
smokeless powder.

The Currin boys and G.B.L;nn drove
to Troutda'e last Monday 41) head of beef
cattle, and sold them for 2'4 and 2a
cents per pound.
Miller brothers of Fall Creek, on the
upper Clackamas, have located three
gold and silver quartz claims, which
they are sanguine will pay handsomely
when properly developed.
There have been many prospectors in
the Cascade mountains near here the
past summer.
Mr S. 0. Huffman and others have
located a coal mine, which they think
will be valuable when developed. They
claim the vein is 10 inches thick, and of
good coal. The mine is'.located on Eagle
creek, about eight miles east of this
place.

Miss Cretie Lemon has returned home
from Portland. She thinks there is no
place like home.
Mr. Estuce Dear lorff of Damascus was
on the hills last Sunday to see his girl.
It was a fine day for buggy riding.
Miss Sadie Surface has come homo to
stay a w hile. She lias been working at
Spiingwater for several months.
Edwin Burlingame and ilber Wade
were in the mountains last week hunt
ing. Mr. Burlingame killed three bear.

Probate flatters.
The will of the late N. 0. Walden was
filed for probate. The instrument is in
the handwriting of the testator, and was
executed August 10,1895, E.G. Oaurteld
and tlermaif lv. .Ione'9 being the wit
nesses. Mr. Walden bequeathed all his
estate, real, p rsonal and mixed, to his
wife, "to be used and disposed of as she
shall deem for the best interest of her
eelt and our children." Mrs. Walden,
Geo. A. Harding, E. E Charman ami
Oh'as. n.JCaulield are named as execu
tors of the will without bond. In the
petition for probate the estimated value
uf the estate is given at $20,1100.
J.M. Tracy appointed administrator
