"There is . uo short cut to the sixth
sense. There may be something like it
in mesmerism uud hypnotism, but that
is not ut all what 1 mean. What is pos
sible is for every child of man to be
come what you call normally clairvoy
ant that is, for any one to possess
himself of the power of seeing aud
hearing, as plainly as be sees and hears
material things, the Invisible forms
aud voices thut surround him.
"The power is one that ought to be
tinder control. There will be only barm
done if you do not shut at will tbe clair
voyant eye. Imagine the mischief that
would happen if when life and death
hung ou tbe absolute concentration of
all faonlticg ou the subject immediately
before you, if at tbtt supreme monicut
you were to see the whole phantasma
goria of borderland pan between you
aud tbe point of exclusive interest. If
you canuot control your sixth sense, you
hurl htitlnr link nnnnirn it. It is tnnoll
better to do without it than to be con
trolled by it.
" You should have the House at com
mand when you Med it, as you have
your microscope or your telescopo, but
better have neither if you urn to be
compulsorily doomed fit other will than
yours to interrupt the work of life by a
spectaoleof the infinitely little or the
influitoly remote. Man should always
be master of his senses, especially of
tbe sixth sense, as it is called."
In hor further statements to Mr. Stead
Juliu goes on to Bay thut the iuvestigator
must alwuys be simple aud not to bo
couBtuntly thinking of himself. In
other words, self consciousness nmst be
avoided, or it will play huvoo with tho
chances of success. All one's mental
faculties ore needed. Everything must
be exumiued aud tested without preju
dice und without partiality. Nothing
oan be achieved without time aud pa
tience. The first thing to be done to see tho
invisible, oues, Juliu says, is to be very
still and to wait. When quite still und
pussive, close your eyes und think cf
the one whom you wish to see. If it is
a friend still alive iu the body, it will
help you if ut the sumo time, although
that is not essential, ha or sho be also
passive und alono. When you have two
spirits iu accord, both Becking tho same
thing, the difficulties ure less, but you
must be agreed iu heart and soul. If
you could keep tho couoentriitod quiet
attention for u longer period than five
minutes without becoming tired, then
you hud butter do so. At no time, how
ever, force yourself, for a strain means
failure.
If in this way, Julia declures, one
succeeds iu ucquiriug lucoesH, it is ac
quired forever. There will be no more
parting between tho one who has gained
his object aud the Bpirit world. The
greatest danger ia that tho sixth sense
may control the individual instead of
being iu itself controlled. New York

THE LOBSTER TANK.
An Aquarium i:hllilt That Many Ylw
With Lively Interest.
There are few tanks ut tho aquarium
more interesting than Unit ruiituiiifiig
the lobsti iH. The lobi'ters Iheio now are
not uicut, like some of tho monsters
thut have Urn exhibited, but they uro
lively und iu good condition, and the
display of their characteristics as they
move ulout or puuse to eat is almost
startling to ouu uufuuilliur with tho
lobster iu life.
Whoever bus picked up a live lobster
in u market and found the big claws
I'.rooping, us they will if the lobster
hasn't much life left iu him, is sure to
be interested When ho sees tho lobster
here wulking off briskly ou his slender
legs, carrying his big cluwg in front of
him clear of the ground and his heuvv
tail clear likewiso. His ordinary man
tier of progression is forward, und when
he turns he swings his heuvily weighted
projecting endi; with facility, but if he
meets uu obstruction or lin enemy his
usual way is lo dart buckwurd aud per
haps diagonally upward through tho
water, which the loLstcr cuu do with
greut suddenness.
The lobster's feeding apparatus is
wonderful. About the innutb there ure
lots of little' attachments, all tho time
iu motion when tho lobster is feeding,
wbich slice the food off iu little shreds
as the lobster holds it up to bis mouth.
If another lobster should come up, this
lobster would know it, even though the
other came up behind or ut the side, and
would turn to defend himself or to fight
or to flee or to wurn the other away.
The lobster's long feelers be cuu pro
ject one iu one direction aud the other
in another, aud with these, as be moves
forward, back or sidewise, he guards
against danger.
There are perhaps a dozen lobsters in
the tank. In the center of the tank there
is a little rock. There is likely to be
teen upon this rock a little lobster, not
a dull, old lobster lying down, but an
alert young lobster ataudiug up and sup
porting easily his big claws and his
powerful tail a young lobster ready to
eat, to fight or to run away. New York

TRAPPING CROWS.
It It Mot an rT Matter to Net tho Wily
lllrds.
Crows are trapped and sold to sports
men for shooting matches, usually bring
ing f 10 per 100, but, like other things,
when scarce they bring more.
It is no simple matter to trap crows,
for the crow is a wily bird, and tocatcb
him iu a net set for tbat purpose re
quires skill, aud puticnoe as well, but
tho hunger of tbe crow is always the
trapper's greatest aid. One man alone
Would make but little headway catching
crows and would probably sit all day in
his little bough house ready to spring
his net, but tho crows would give bis
bait a wido berth because they would
know thut he was there.
After placing the carcass of some ani
mal on a field the net is set close to it
by bending poles of saplings, on which
tho net is bung flat to the ground, where
they are held down by triggorlike pegs,
and a Hue run CO yards or more to a
house built of boughs, where the trap
per is secreted.
Another carcass is usually laid some
hundreds of yards distant on the same
or another field, where there is no net
set. The trappers, usually two in num
ber, go into the bougb hnr.se together
before daylight, and wb 'he crows be
gin to assemble ou tho lii .-s one of them
goes out and wulks away. The crows,
seeing him leave, grow a little bolder
and opproucb tbe bait in oues and twos,
but stop only long enough to got a beak
ful of the flesh aud fly off again. The
carcass where there is no net Bet is of
course the best patronized, but tbe trap
per on the outside makes it bis business
to walk near enough to tbat to keep the
crows from settling on it in numbers
and thus satisfying their hunger with
out going to the one where the net is.
After awhile their hunger gets tbe bet
ter of their judgment or their fear, and
they gather on the carcass where the
net is. This is tbe opportunity ot the
man in the bough borne, who, with a
vigorous pull on tbe line, springs the
net over them. Quick work must be
done then by the trappers, who rush np
to tbe net, to keep the trapped crows
from orawling out at the ends and the
front, where it is not staked fait to tbe
ground. With their hands covered with
stout buckskin gloves, to keep the crows
from bitiug aud scratching tbem, the
oaptured birds are put in bags ready to
be carried off the field. From 40 to 60
are frequently caught at one pull, but it
is a rare thing to get more than two
springs of tbe net in one day. Pbila
