OREGON CITY, J JLY 9, 1897. THE FREE SILVER MOVEMENT. Viewed Irorn an Independent dem ocratic stand- pint, the silver movement Is fairly taking the country by storm. The wave is growing with a steady swerve that will gather vote in ila course from every clan and parly, and in 1900 free silver will be inscribed on the banner that lrad to victory. The present conditions in the country are far from aatufactory ; in fact, they are ectUHlly deplorable and alarming. Demogogu 'S and orators shouted refrom and prosperity from the platforms, previous to the piesidential election last November, but there is neither reform or prosperity. The conditions, if any thinR are worse than they were laBt year. Better wages and protection wero promised to tlio working classes, but the laborer is being oppressed to the eartli by the giganlio and oppressive power of millior.aire trusts. The tendency if the present policy is to create and perpetuate the power of the trust antocrat and make the laborer a veritable menial. It is proper and just that an individual who is industrious and conducts lU business with brains, should be rewarded with a competency. But it is not just to concede that a trust multi-millionaire's brain is hundreds of thousands of times bigger, greater or more active than other people's brains. Under the existing condition of things the trust manipulators are controlling everything. If they succeed in their course, they will soon own everything in sight and out of sight, not excepting the common people themselves. At the recent democratic convention in Iowa. 1000 delegates were in atten dance, and loud were the cheers for free silver and Bryan. The free silver re publicans fell into line, who agreed to use the name "democratic" for the fusion ticket this year. One of the greatest democratic, conventions ever held in Ohio commenced and sojourned at Columbus. Ohio, last week. The pntherinir was lor free silver throughout The result of the deliberations of the Ohio convention Is of peculiar portent at this time a state that has furnished a Vallandingham and a Thurman, who were the avowed champions ot the peo pie. Ohio has ioundetl the keynote of success in no uncertain way, and the people who deserted the Btttn Jard of free silver last year to be misbd by the promises of protection to American labor and reform, will remain steadfast and sin no more. They will put on sack cloth and ashes, but will ever afterward keep In the straight and narrow path that leadB to a future not controlled by trusts. Following is an extract from Hon. Ulric Stone's speech, made as temporary chairman at the great democratic con vention, held at Columbus, Ohio, last week: "It is expected that your temporary chairman shall strike the keynote of the coining campaign. Well, that keynote shall be Bounded on a silver chord. It will be no new note, but a prolongation of that sounded by the national convention at Chicago last summer, and onu that has grown in power and volume since, carried in a grand diapason of over 6,000,000 voices to the polls last November. There may be some in this convention, though I doubt it, who hoped that the silver note was silenced. There were many in tho land who immediately after the last November election hoped and believed so, but to all such republicans, Mo Kinley democrats, or followers of the dudes and dotards who met at Indian apolis, the renewal of the slogan of free silver here an I in Kentucky will bo a warning that the fiery cross is speeding over mountain and valley, over hill and dale, over fm!d and forest, summoning the silver clansmen to fight the great battle for the peoplo and receiving no uncertain response. Who doubts that the rich men are despots, who that looks calmly ahead, but knows that unless prevailing conditions are soon changed, the poor will become 'banditti'? Five millions of men are begging for leave to toil. All classes cry to the McKinley administration for bread and are offered a stone. The people ask for money, and Charley (irosvenor pitches them a sugar beet." The first number of Tim New Timk, the successor of New Occasions, is con sidered the best specimen of a reform magazine yet published In this country. Ita editors, B. O. Flower and Frederick U Adams, have supplied just what thousands of people have been looking for, via : a high grade magaiine devoted to such proposed reforms as the initiative and referendum, natural ownership of luonopol ies and k i ndred topic o fat ional interest. There is not a dull paragraph in the eighty pages of the July number of The Nkw Ti, and the wonder is that such a magazine can be produced for ten cents a month or one dollar a year. LOCAL SUMMARY.
