TiieOhkoon Oity Locks. The opening of the canal and locks at the cascades after being under construction (or about 20 years, recalls the opening of the canal and locks at Oregon City, which was considered fully as important an event at that time.' The opening took place on New Year's day, 1873, the date fixed by law. Theso"stupendoug improvements," as they weio then considered;' were com menced nearly two yean before that time. The opening wap(not a very magnificent demonstration the day be ing cold, windy and rainy, and the only boat obtainable for the' occasion wai the Maria Wilkins, which, after a desperate struggle, and being favored by the strong up-stream wind, succeeded in getting past the Clackamas rapids and reaching Oregon City. The boat and guests en tered the cunal atll :50 o'clock, "ascend ed in sof tey through seven ponderous gates" to the upper basin and back in 2 hours and 30 minutes, butjthis was not considered a fair test, and it was claim ed that the time would be shortened. The only speech on the occasion was made by Governor Lafayette Grover. Fire Insurance F. E. OoaaldiM. A Livb Wilts. The Jeffersoulan of Emporia, Kuu Buys: The presenta tion of "Trilby" nt the Midland Inst night by the Orris OI)er compuny was the best play put on in the city since Morton & Pennington's company of stars visited the town, and will bear repe tition. The work was good all through, Mie stuge settings were rich, and the audience appreciative. Miss Orris Ober as "Trilby" appeared especially fitted to the character, and Mr. Ettinger as 8vengeli was a smooth portrayal of the cold-blooded villain, Little Billee was entirely too pretty and sweet-voiced for h male character, but played a strong part. The entire company appeared to best advantage last night in "Trilby." 10 Big Ins. Companies F. E. Donaldson. Republican Ratification.
