The election of president is still in doubt. The republicans
claim 264 of the 447 electoral votes, but as this number includes
the 55 votes still in doubt, of California (9), the two Dakotas (7)

Indiana (15), Michigan (14), West Virginia (6) and Delaware (4), the
democrats have, at present, as much ground to claim the victory as
the republicans. The Associate Press concern is in the hands of
the republican party, and it is not to be expected that it would be in
a hurry to disseminate news unfavorable to McKinley. The cam
paign dispatches which fill the columns of the dailies are contradictory
and of little value. We can only "wait till the clouds roll by," which
probably, will reveal the election of the People's Champion, William
Jennings Bryan.
The Bryan men in Portland bantered the republicans on Wed
ncsday evening by offering to bet on Bryan 2 to 1, but McKinley ites
who would "put up" were very scarce. The republican roosters of
Oregon City crowed too early, for now their tail feathers are drooping.
If l'ryan is elected, it will teach the millionaires once for all that
American manhood cannot be bought like cattle. His defeat will be
an incentive to all true patriots to renew and continue the contest
against the. tyranny of consolidated wealth. The Democracy re
cognizes that Capital and Lab o are necessary to one another, in
friendly harmony, not, as now, the one suppressing the other into servi
tude, a condition that is menacing to Liberty and the perpetuity of
the American Republic in fact as well as in name.

On Thursday afternoon, the dispatches placed to Bryan's credit
196 electoral votes; McKinley, 189. All the rest at sea.
LATER As we go to press (Thursday at 5 p. m.) a telegram
was received from Chairman Jones conceding McKinley's election.
