Some time ago the assessor of Clacka
mas county demanded that tho com
mittee pay taxeii on the luuds In that
county to be occupivd by thu Bull Kuu
pipeline. 1 he matter was referrod to
City Attorney Muir, who notified the
assessor that, under tho statutes, the
lands in question were exempt from
taxation. Since then, however, a dep
uty sheriff, acting under the assessor's
instructions, lias posted on trees along
the route notices to tho effect that the
lands will be sold for delinquent taxes
next month. When Clerk Dodgu re
ported this matter to the committee
luesduy, Mr. Duloh moved that the
city attorney be requested to take steps
to have the proposed sale enjoined, and
the motion was carried promptly and
witli unanimity. About HtkJO acres of
Clackamas county have been appropri
ated for pipe-line purpose, mid it
seemed lo be the opinion of the com
mittee that I hey cannot legally be taxed.

Miller, of Jacksonville, who was re
cently appointed letter of the U. S
laud cilice here, returned from Wash
ington last Thursday. He was accom
panied by bis brother, Win. L. Miller,
and Geo. It. Neil, graduates of the law
department of the Ann Arbor university,
who were to apply for admission to the
supreme court. Thecolonul accmnpi niud
them to Salem and from there he
went to his home in Jacksonville,
where his commission awaited him
He intends to assume the duties of bis
ollice about the first of the month. Col.
Miller says that he had heard so much
of the timber luuds of Michigan that be
was anxious to see litem and while East
look a Kok at some sample trees; he
says that the same timber in Oregon
would be passed over by a man who was
looking for the location of a claim.

Long has received a call from the Fhst
Baptist church of East Portland, and ac
cording to tho Oregiminn the church was
never more united nor stiouger than at
present. It pussed the Head episodu
without being injuried by contention-! uf
any sort, as might have been expected
under tho Irving situation. Head, who
deserted bis post so uncerem inloiHly, is
occupying a church in Illinois. How
ever, ho never received anv letters from
the First church of the east side, hut he
managed to get in somehow, and is now
as big as an body, notwithstanding his
extraordinary exploit in Portland.

Hon. A. It. Shipley, one of the oldest
settlers of this county, died in C'orva 1 R
on the 14th, and Ids remains wiri
brought to Oswego, whore he formerly
r, 8 iled, and interred on Sunday. Mr,
Shipley leaves behind him a wife and
six children, four boys: Milton K.,
Lester A., Alphonso W., Kiindolph '. ;
Mrs. E. S. Miller and Mrs. Wallace H.
Slruble. Mrs. Shipley was formerly
Miss Celind i E. Ilines, a niece of Kev.
(iiistavus and Harvey K. Ilines, and a
pioneer of 18.M.
To Biiy Wheat. The Oregon Pacific
boats are preparing to take a hand In
the handling of the wdieut crop of the
Willamette valley which will begin to
be harvested in a few days. They are
stripping the Three Sisters, to make her
as light as possible, and will do the
same with other biats if necessary;
they will haul the wheat from points
along the river to Corvallis, there load
it into their cars, taking it to Vaquina
city and transporting it th'Mic-.' to San
Francisco.

the county und Chas. Meserve to repre
sent the society, to act in conjunction
with tho state society committee. The
attendance was not as large us it should
have been. The next meeting will be
held at Cnnby on September lL'th.

will make its first appearance on Friday

the interest of the peoples' party and

a republican paper, is understood

thinks the Oregon City corresp indent of
the Orrgnnian did hi company an in
justice when he misstated (according to
Mr. Johnson) facts in regard to the
testing of ' the bricks for the improve
ment of Main street here. The br'ct
selected broke at 80 tons' pressure and
went to pieces at UK) tons' pleasure and
was not subjected to HO tons' pressure.
Mr Johnson says the corners and
edges were broken off the brick select
ed, in the cylinder test, and that three
(out of four) of his brick broke in two,
besides losing comers, but Ids were not
burnt all over like the Fulton Park
brick, lie further says that Oregon
City will got a giod street with the
brick selected.

customer culled at one of the leading
stores in Barlow the other day witli a
view of purchasing a pair of overalls for
h'jr husband. The obliging salesman,
who is quite a bunch of politeness, pro
ceeded to show the lady two or three
styles of overalls, dwelling meantime on
the good quality and makeup of the
goods. In his exuberant overflow of
words he said : "Madam, here is a pair
that you cun weur over your pants, una
they will not look unbecoming it you
wear them without pants." The lady
assured the young man that her husband
generally wore the breeches, hereupon

Main Street Imi-hovembxt. At a
special meeting of the city council, held
on Thursday evening of last week, three
bids were opened lor the improvement;
The lowest bid was from the American
Bridge Contracting Co., which was
$.'!7,7o8, or 5S0 below the bid of the
contractor who deposited a worthless
check and failed to sign contract. A
coui.cil committee went to Portland on
Friday and tested the brick and accepted
the Fulton Park brick for the pavement.
In tlia evening another special meeting
was held and final action was taken by
H vote of ti to 2 in favor of the improve
mi nt, Greenman and Kelly voting
against it.
C. P. Wixesett is a practical under
taker He is now making it a special
business. He is also a practical em
balm, r as all who have had his services
ran testily. He keeps the most exten
sive stock of caskets, cases and colli ns
south of Portland, and also a very fine
grade of cloth - covered and metallic
work. The caskets and coffins are
ready trimmed so that persons from a
