commission, on Monday 84 head of Jer
sey entile were killed on W. H. Ladd's
faun hack or East Portland. Mr. Laild s
herd of Jerseys consist of 15H head and

surgeon, Dr. Williycomhe, because
tuberculosis has nuneared ainnnir the
entile, the saino disease that laid
low many of Capt. Appersou's Jer
seys, in liolli cases, it appears, the
hsease was Imported from California.
The action of the stale board ought to
convince all fair-minded people that the

attention to the diseased condition of
the latter gentleinnn Jersey cattle.

steamer of Capt. Graham will have a

laily to Portland and back, and run

$20,000, and will be ono of the finest
and neetest passenger boats on tho Will

Friday, Isaac Selling died at his resi
dence in this city, aged 59 vears, 2
months and 13 days. He had been kept
at home by Illness for a fortnight, but
the sudden fatal termination of the
same was not anticipated. Mr. Selling
has been in the mercantile trade in this
city for over a quarter of a century, and
was one of our most prosperous busi
ness men. No merchant in this section
of the Willamette valley was more
widely known orbnd more warm friends
than he. The remains were taken lo
Portland on Sunday morning for inter
ment. SuKPitiHB Paiity. A pleasant surprise
party was given in honor of Miss Grace
Williams on the 24th inst. Progressive
euchre was the leading feature of the
evening hvemine enjoyed himself im
mensely until a late hour when a delicate
lunch was served of which all partook
before departing for their homes.

A Talkntkd Woman. A temperance
lecture was delivered at the Baptist
church last Tuesday evening by Mrs,
Bailey, her husband assisting her in the
singing, which was highly appreciated
by all present. Mrs. Bailey is indeed
very entertaining and made the old sub
ject a new and Uking one by her pleas
aut stylo of delivery, mo inclemency
of the weather was a good reason for
the house not being crowded.
A Buxlkt ok Puns Gold. The re
sult of an assay of about a pound of ore
from the Estella lode by Mr. Fisk, on
Saturday, was a golden bullet worth
about a dollar. S. R. Greene carefully
observed every step of the assay. The
assayer says it is the richest thing that
has ever come in his hands.
Stolb Thiieb Dollars. Monday
night the saloon of Jack Trembath was
broken into and $.3 in small chan &
taken from the till. During the night
the men in the bnkery next door heurd
a fellow inside while another made some
noise outside. Tuesday morning a pane
was found broken out in a back window.
Build Houses. U. Kleppin, of
Cheweluh, Wash., a miller with some
means, would have located here this
week had he been able to And a house
to live in. As lie could not, he moved
on to Salem. We have absolutely no
houses for rent.

night, a very large bowlder fell off the
escarpment of the bluff upon the steps
running up nt Mr. Burney's residence.
The steps were so badly crushed that
travel on .them was made impossible,
nn I the boxing of the city water pipe
knocked galley west. - The saino night
a large rock also fell off the bluff on the
platform at the railway depot. The
heavy rains are evidently loosening the
foundations of tho Willamette valley.

graph gallery of Prof. Eastman, who
has been here only a week, Is a hne ad

heretofore gone to Portland, can now

Rev. E. T. Ingle has conducted a se
ries of meetings in Eastern Oregon, with
the result that 32 persons have given
their names to join the church. He is
expecting Rev John C. Sylvanus to con
duct a meeting for him at Beaver Creek
church, commencing neat Sabbath at 11
o'clock. Part of the service will he in
the Welsh language. Mr. Sylvanus will
visit the Springwuler church the second
Sunday in February.

Hill, died at Canemah on January 23d.
Her age was nearly 44 years.. Mr. Hill

Early Tuesday morning Mr. McCown
came to his oflice feeling ns well as usual.
About 10 o clocK he took suddenly 111.
A carriage was procured in which he
was taken home. He was insensible all
day and late Wednesday afternoon was
no better.

Aliss Neita Barlow returned to the
schoolroom Monday, having had a
week's vacation, though not much im
proved in health.
The parents of Mr. Chas. Spring, for
merly of McMinnville, arrived in this
city this week and will probably rernain,
as their son is permanently located here.
Rev. Mr. Gibbenv, the pa.jrnr of the
Presbyterian church, has ample reason
to feel encouraged wilb his labors among
us thusfar. On Sunday last-. the in
crease of church membership was 10.
Miss Clara Bark, who has been at
tending the business college in Portland,
has had to remain at homo during the
past week on account of illness of her
mother, who is now much better.
On January 25th a boy wa born to
Mrs. Jas. Lampbier; January 27th, a
girl to Mrs. J. M. Womack; January
28th, a girl to Mrs. Joseph Bergman.
Our population is increasing rapidly.
Miss Nettie Cochran started for Pome-
roy, Wash., on Jhursdny, shere she
Intends to remain for several months.
She started once before but found on ar
riving in Portland that the road nn

so returned home.
