Letters to the Editor Letters to the Editor are welcome and encouraged. They must contain a name; Anonymous letters will not be read or published. Letters may be altered for really-really bad grammar or space when necessary, but it is the publisher’s intent to leave them as they arrive. It’s good for community members to use this space to express opinions, concerns, ideas, or other sentiments, but they are not necessarily the views of the editor/publisher. Don’t be shy. Don’t worry about spelling. Don’t worry about grammar. Just write your letter and send it. Your thoughts & concerns are important. Email to: reviewnewspaper@gmail.com or snail mail to: PO Box 83068, Portland, OR 97283 Former Booster president speaks out on development Dear Editor, I have served as President of the St. Johns Boosters from October 1996 thru December 2009. In that capacity I participated in the St Johns/ Lombard Planning effort. I also have been personally im- pacted by the gentrifi cation of St. Johns. So with that said, I do not support the proposed “The Union At St. Johns” development. The St. Johns/ Lombard Plan is to allow for increased densi- ty, while maintaining the unique qualities each neighborhood of- fers to the community. With care- ful planning, neighborhoods can allow for change while keeping the unique character of their area. The Union At St. Johns erodes the uniqueness and history of the community. It tears away one of the Gateways into St. Johns. The St. Johns/ Lombard Plans states: Gateways are located at key plac- es or intersections and identify the entrance to a district or area. De- velopment adjacent to gateways should contribute to the sense of entry and level of importance through signature architecture, ap- propriate building scale, character, and orientations. I do not see this in the proposed development. Additionally, the main objec- tives of the redesign were to create a stronger gateway to the business district and improve visibility for the downtown St. Johns commer- cial core. The newly created space can function as a plaza, and offers an opportunity to create an en- hanced gateway to the downtown business district. The space occupied by the former island could be designed to allow for more active pedestrian use and improve sight lines into the com- mercial core for traffi c approach- ing the intersection from the east. A four-story building does not im- prove sight lines into the business district and does little to enhance the gateway. The St. Johns/ Lombard Plans also states: Specifi c design details still need to be developed through a design engineering process with public involvement. To my knowl- edge PBOT has not hosted any community meetings with regards to the proposed changes to this im- portant gateway into St. Johns.
