A
plan to vacate city owned
right-of-ways and ivy
island to create two pub-
lic plazas adjacent to a new de-
velopment at 8247 N. Lombard,
passed with unanimous approval
at a Planning and Sustainability
Commission hearing on Novem-
ber 17, 2015. The two tree-lined
public spaces would front retail
stores or cafes on the ground fl oor
of the four-story, 100-apartment
building. The stair-stepped ar-
chitectural design also includes a
private courtyard for tenants and
underground parking (New Devel-
opment at St. Johns East Gateway,
Barbara Quinn, St. Johns Review,
July 24, 2015).
Renderings of the plazas were
shown at the hearing during a pre-
sentation by Alan Jones, principal
architect at Jones Architecture,
who also cited the goals of the St.
Johns Lombard Plan that guide
development standards in the St.
Johns pedestrian district.
The proposal to add the pla-
zas includes reconfi guration of a
blind curve on Lombard currently
adjacent to the building site. Ad-
