With family by his side Darrell
LaVerne Fransen passed away in
the afternoon hours of October
25, 2015 in Vancouver, WA. He
was 89. He was an honest, hard-
working family man.
Darrell was born in Gettysburg,
SD on June 9, 1926, the fi rst child
of Arend and Minnie Fransen.
Early in his life he worked the
family farm with a team of hors-
es. He did this with pride. He was
known as an expert horseman.
Darrell enlisted in the Army on
August 28, 1944 and went to boot
camp at Fort Snelling, Minneso-
ta. During his time in the army he
was involved in battles and occu-
pations in Rhineland, Central Eu-
rope and Ardennes. He received
the American Campaign Medal,

ern Theater ribbon and the Vic-
tory Medal for his WWII service.

They moved to Portland, OR in
1947. His fi rst job in Portland
was driving truck for his broth-
ers-in-law Duane and Harry
Swisher. This was short lived, as
it didn’t provide a steady income.
He also worked at Armour and
Swift Meat Packers briefl y be-
fore returning to driving truck.
He obtained a job with Consol-
idated Freightways that contin-
ued until his retirement in 1988.
That steady income provided the
foundation to raise six children.
Darrell and Corrine raised their
children in the same house since
1955. After retirement they held
their family ties hosting all kinds
of family events and game nights.
They also took great enjoyment
and pride in volunteering time
to Meals on Wheels delivering
meals to the elderly. He was the
pilot and she was his dedicated
co-pilot.
