St. Johns Development To the Editor: Thank you for the excellent article by Barbara Quinn showing the proposed mixed use building rendition at the corner of N Lombard and N Charles- ton that would replace the existing Hookah bar, Weirs Cyclery/Huk and the Finnish Church. First, I/we are happy that this pro- posal meets the intent of the St John/ Lombard Plan (adopted in 2004). Second, with that in mind, I/we would like to address three issues, two of which were raised in the Letters to the Editor that appeared in the July 24 issue. Of particular concern is the elimi- nation of the unsafe/blind curve along Lombard and Charleston. As a some- times driver but mostly pedestrian and biker that utilizes this intersection almost daily, I would vehemently dis- agree with those who don’t feel this is as bad as portrayed. If one watches driver behavior at this corner you will come away noting that drivers appear Annual Spirit of Portland Awards call for nominations Call for nominations for the 31st Annual Spirit of Portland Awards closes Friday, Septem- ber 12, 2015. Organizers say: It was a banner Year for Cathedral Park Jazz Festival 2015 The 35th Cathedral Park Jazz Festival, the longest running FREE jazz festi- val west of the Mississippi celebrates a banner year. It exceeded projections both in terms of attendance and do- nations. More than 10,000 people attended the festival. The donations, cash sales and sponsor’s insured this festival will be back in 2016. The Jazz Society of Oregon and the Cathedral Park Committee who staged and managed the festival would like to thank the entire com- munity of St. Johns. The community of St. Johns has been exceedingly generous and gracious this year and in years past. They love this historic event and we love them. We’d also like to thank the many volunteers who braved many hours in record temperatures to serve the thou- sands of festival goers. The St. Johns Review, who pulled through again with a wonderful pro- gram and keepsake, was vital to the festivals success. Thank you! Honestly, we were apprehensive that the record heat would keep many away but to our surprise they showed up to celebrate this historic event. Good music and good people are al- ways a winning combination. Of course, it doesn’t hurt to have a stellar line-up of Portland’s fi nest in- cluding, guitarist and award-winning vocalist Ben Rice, beloved power- house LaRhonda Steele, the Dover Weinberg Quartet and master guitar- ists Lloyd Jones, Norman Sylvester, Ben Rice, Jay Bird Koder, Michael Osborn, David Stassens and young master guitarist Taylor Newville, 18, from Roosevelt High School, to put the crowning touch on Friday nights blues celebration. Saturday, we opened with the Port- land Youth Jazz Orchestra led by Ben Medler followed by the Chris Parker Quartet, Blueprints Trio, Kung Pao Chickens, Pa’lante, Toni Lincoln Quartet and Hailey Niswanger’s PDX Soul who had the entire audience on its feet raised the roof. Sunday kicked off with the Alan Jones Academy of Music, followed by the Todd Bishop Group, Kelly Broad- way Quartet with Randy Porter, and the Robert Moore Orchestra, a twelve- piece ensemble of Portland’s fi nest. The festival wrapped up with the Paul Creighton Project and his tribute to the legendary Stevie Wonder, which by all accounts was a stunning crowd pleaser. Lastly, we could not have pulled this off without the support of our spon- sors. It is the generosity and the be- lief of these people in jazz and the St. Johns community that made it possi- ble.
