From The Editor
Hi Readers,
This message is in
regard to my plea for
old hard-bound is-
sues of the St. Johns
Review I wish to be
returned. I made this
plea in the last issue Gayla Patton
Editor/Owner
(May 15, 2015).
I have learned that at least some
of the papers are at the Oregon
Historical Society. It’s unclear
how they got them, and doesn’t
solve my problem of creating a
permanent electronic record of
them, but at least I know they’re
safe there. Or at least until the day
they disintegrate so badly nobody
can read them. Perhaps the Oregon
Historical Society has the funding
to create a lasting electronic histo-
ry, which they can then share with
me. I’m hoping.
I haven’t heard from anybody
at the St. Johns Historical Society
yet, but I have learned they have
many hard-bound copies, so I
hope to hear from someone soon.
I received a wonderful phone
call from Colleen Hosmer. You
may recognize the name if I tell
you she was once Colleen “Irish”
– her mother and father, Robert
and Ellen Irish, are former owners
of the St. Johns Review and were
well-known and loved through-
out the community. Colleen and
her sister Patricia (who recently
passed away,) once told me they
used to sleep on bundles of news-
papers while their parents worked
late into the night setting type (by
hand) for an upcoming issue of the
paper. Oh, the wonderful memo-
ries! I’m appreciative that Colleen
keeps in touch with me. She’s a
delightful woman with tons of his-
torical information and so fun to
chat with.
Colleen told me she recognized
one of the ladies in a picture in the
last issue on page 8 titled: ”60 year
old Shirlee Ann Fund still import-
ant for community,” written by
Station 22 Captain Eric Pedersen.
She said the lady on the right (on
page 8 standing by the car) was
Jewel Sundquist. The photos in
the article didn’t come to me with
names, but it didn’t take long to
get phone calls and emails as to
what her name was.
One reader who also recognized
her said Jewel was an active com-
munity leader and commented that
Jewel Sundquist was a big part of
starting the Shirley Ann Fund, and
she also wrote for the St. Johns
Review, back in the day. The note
continued saying that her Review
articles, “Hi Neighbor,” had a big
following.
I also received an email from
someone with deep roots who was
upset about leaving out Jewel’s
name on the photo and said there
was much, “St. Johns History that
you continually leave out in your
reporting.” I don’t take offense to
the comment because it’s under-
standably pretty hard to cover 112
years of history – especially when
you don’t have the original papers
in which to refer. But, I am hon-
ored we have the wonderful histo-
ry we have to even try covering it.
No other community in Portland
has such historical stories and a
newspaper as old as the St. Johns
Review in which to try and keep
them alive. Let’s appreciate that!
I’m always amazed at how deep
the roots go in St. Johns. Residents
are protective of its history and
quick to make corrections or add
information. I fi nd that very en-
dearing. Residents are very keen
on keeping the area’s history alive,
not only for their own sakes, but
also to keep newer residents aware
of it and to make sure it’s accurate.
Kudos to them and it’s just another
reason why the documented his-
tory of North Portland should all
be located in one place and not
scattered around various locations
getting yellowed and crispy with
time.
Keep the letters of communica-
tion coming readers! I love getting
them. Until next issue, Gayla

h ead or as a Photo of the Week. A third pictures may also be used as space allows.
At the end of 2015 (most likely in November,) the pictures will be voted upon by read-
ers for which photo reader’s liked the best. The winner will receive a $100 cash prize
from the Review.
Pictures must be:
*Sent in high resolution (200+) and sent to reviewnewspaper@comcast.net or review-

the right to use them in current and future issues.
* Color pictures are preferred, but outstanding black & whites might be used.
* Photos used in 2013 and/or 2014 may be sent and used again.
* If multiple photos are sent at one time by a photographer, the Review will use judgment
for the picture (or pics) we think will print best in the paper.
* Since this is a fi rst, these rules may change during the year, or more suggestions and
rules added. (We’ll learn as we go.)
* One vote per person. Voting begins in November where all the year’s pictures will be
re-shown.
(Disclaimer: Pictures appearing in the paper are reformatted to tiff’s at 600 resolution
for printing presses. After placement in the paper and being printed on newsprint, the
photos may lose a certain amount of clarity. The Review cannot be responsible for lack
of clarity or any other changes in the pictures. The Review is not responsible or liable
for pictures sent in saying their author has taken them when in fact they may not have.)
