University of Portland will host
“Taste and See,” a winemakers
event set for Saturday, March 21
at 6 p.m. in the Bauccio Commons
Boardroom on campus, 5000 N.
Willamette Blvd. The event has
limited seating and requires an
RSVP. Tickets are $100 per person.
“Taste and See” is an evening
featuring four Catholic winemakers
from the Columbia Valley region
of southeastern Washington, an
area known for its stunning vistas
of sage-brush covered bluffs over-
looking the Snake River.
All of the guest winemakers es-
tablished themselves in the 1980s
and today produce critically ac-
claimed wines that regularly re-
ceive 90+ ratings. The featured
speakers include: Charlie Hop-
pes with Fidelitas Wines, named
Washington’s 2014 Winemaker of
the Year, Jessica Gamache with
Gamache Vintners, and Jeff and
Vicki Gordon with Gordon Es-
tates. The winemakers will share
the ways in which their work is in-
spired and inspirited by their faith.
The event affords the opportuni-
ty to enjoy select wines from their
cellars, sumptuous hors d’oeuvres,
and wonderful stories by Brian
Doyle, author of The Grail: A year
ambling & shambling through an
Oregon vineyard in pursuit of the
best pinot noir wine in the whole
wide world.

introduce book
Author Don DuPay is introducing
his new book “Behind the Badge in
River City, A Portland Police Mem-
oir” at St. Johns Book Seller, 8622
N. Lombard on March 6 from 7:30-
9:00pm.
DuPay said, “Why begin in St.
Johns? Because much of my sto-
ry takes place in the North End of
Portland and the St. Johns area,
during a time long ago, (the early
1960’s) when North Precinct was
commanded by one of the most
historically corrupt Portland police
captains ever, Jim “Diamond Jim”
Purcell.
The memoir documents my time
working that district, and the diffi -
culties I had trying to do good po-
lice work against tremendous odds,
as well as the toll it took on me per-
sonally. The stories are both funny
(because funny things do happen
to cops,) and sad and tragic at the
same time, because more than any-
thing, a police offi cer will see the
very worst in human behavior pos-
sible.
The memoir details the struggles
and passion of a young idealist cop,
working in an often corrupt envi-
ronment and how the slow arc of
burn-out affects this man’s attitude,
health and his ability to endure in
an impossibly demanding and often
unrewarding profession. Happily
I have so far outlived most of the
miscreants in my book, including
many bad guys and several bad
cops.”
