PARAMOUNT ISSUE
Tlio recent elections in west
ern otatcs emphasized ono point
the people want n reduction in
the overhead cost of govern
ment. Laying asido nil arguments
and prejudices for or ogoinst
any candidate, the people linvo
shown unmistakably that they
wish reduction in present tax
burdens. It is useless to tell tlu
people that thoy aro to blame
for present stato expenses. They
may havo voted for the tax rais
ing measures but in nine cases
out of ten the average citizen
dot's ho not realizing the aggre
gate burden ho is heaping upon
himself. .
Any man who reads the coun
try papers west of the Rocky
Mountains could draw but one
conclusion, namely, the people
wcro demanding a new deal in
public affairs. Incumbents in of
fice who failed to rccognizo this
condition havo been defeated by
candidates who saw the nituatiouj
Candidates who have gone in
to office on a tax reduction and
efficiency program in public af
fairs must make good with their
pre-election promises if they wish
to escape condemnation of the
people. Holdover public offi
cials who are in office must also
recognize the present state of
public opinion and trim their
sails accordingly.
Every lino of privato business
has reduced expenses. Every de
partment s Btatc, city and coun
ty governments must do tho same.
This docs not mean curtailing ef
ficiency. It simply means giv
ing more service for tho same
money and where possible, bet
tor service for less money.

outstanding building projects of
tho Portland district promoted
by tho Homo Missionary and tho
church extension society through
tho centenary movement, is now
Hearing completion. Tho new
edifice, creoted at n cost of $!10,
000, is of English architecture
and hi complete in its appoint
ments throughout, consisting of
a beautiful nuditorum which has
a seating capacity of 400 persons,
and with tho addition of t ho jun
ior department in the rear, can
easily accommodate 150 more. It
also has a homey church parlor
with fireplace, and bullet, which
will bo used by many class and
church organizations.
Thcro has also been provided a
very attractive community hull
which will servo tho young poo-

cials and also make it possible to
servo 300 guests at ono time. A
kitchen is conveniently located
adjoining tho community hall.
Another feature of groat in
terest is t he children's primary
department and nursery which is
featured for speeul comfort of
the little folic. lUis hoped that
this may develop in a day nur
sery for the benefit of working
mothers.
On tho third floor aro three
rooms which will accommodate
2f() intermediate and junior pu
pils of Die Sunday school. One
beautiful feature is the memorial
windows donated by members of
the church in memory of defeas
ed relatives. Hack of tho pulpit
is the "Ascension;" on tho right
tho "Hock of Ages;" ".losus the
Light of the World;" "Christ in
Qethsemane;" on tho left, "'I lie
Sower;" "The Good Shepherd;"'
"Tho Gleaners" and "The Hoy
Christ." Tho altar rail and pul
pit, relics of tho old Taylor street
church, wero donated by Ilia or
ganization. Pioneer Methodist church has a
notji'le lustcry. Tho first pr -aching
service was held in 181(5. Tho
next year the church was organ!--
ed and a little later a small
e'turch budding erected at the
foot of Hinlimond street on the
banks or the Willamette. In
a more substantial structure a as
erected on the same location,
which was moved up tho hill lo
tho corner of Syracuse and West
Lcavitt streets in 11)0-1. Tho pres
ent structure was begun in 1021
and Ls located adjoining tho li
brary on Host Charleston Htrcet.

Rev. W. 13. Klostcr, tho pastor,

construction beside three parson
ages and tho tabernacle erected
last year on tho I3ast side.
