JOHNS REVIEW , II, h. RAY, Bdltor and Publisher Published Friday of EachWeek 404 N. Jcxfiey St Empire 0321 Subtcriyl on prlc S1.SQ Pgr yar. TH8 RRViKf U entered at post office In Portland. Oregon, aa mall matter ol the second class under the Act of Gon rcgi ol March 3, 1879. Tim State of Orciron is the oldest of tbe northwest but in Hoinn rcsneets lacks the tie velopinent of its neighbors. It has not yet reached a million in population wliilc its otlspring to 1 10 north, the .state ot Wiusinng ton. has missed the million mark ntwl Iiiim Hpvenil cities imst the inindred thousand mark, while our own state boasts of but one eity of that class. There is some uood reason for difference in irrowth of the two states. Ad vertising of our resources to the world no doubt is a vital factor in statu or eitv trrowth. Wo see this exemplified to the highest in our jii'ilmi bar to the south. Call fornia is no doubt the best ad vertised slate in the Union and is iiiakiiiir tho greatest material growth of nnv of the states. It. was the idea of tho project ore of the exposition to advertise our statu more extensively. TJtc growl h of the eity and state was rand after t 10 Lewis and Clark fair and would no doubt be even ireater now could wo have a fair. Thousands of pea - plo uru headed to the coast states. Tim defeat of tho exoo Mil inn liv tlin vnti'i-rt nf tlin state lias nipped this advertising pro ject in the nud. The question now is What are we going to do to tret our sharo of new people 1 1 ...... . 1... 1 1 1 nuii new iniuisirius mm. ouiy uccu to know more or us to oceanic n nart of 11st The Slirinern meeting here in l!)0 was a irreiit event and bellied our eitv. We should hv " . " all means have moiv of such eon vent ions. How about the hilts convent lout The big majorities given in fa vor of the lliirnsidc and It ohm Inland bridges at the election last when the pcoplu see tho great an to shorten the idstaueo to the need of a thing thoy will gladly have it, oven though it costs sev- oral million dollars, nud will eventually have to he paid for by them. Tho Iturnsido bridge has been declared unsafe and had to ho replaced. Tho southern section of the eity needed u bridge far ther south than thu Hawthorne bridge. Thu next bridge to he built must be across from St. Johns. The industrial section of tho eity is fast moving north. Tho ten thousand pcoplu nf this section need n bridge to connect up with the industries of tho west side and to shorten tho distance to he heart of the eity. We should convince the dec torato of our eity of tho ncces sity for this bridge that when the time is ripe the vote will he just as favorable as it was for the two bridges voted on at the last election. Last week wns gonernlly ob served as (lood Hook week and no doubt many hooks were read Hint would not have been had it not been for tho publicity given through the papers, booksellers, schools, libraries and other a geuoies. (lood hook week is n fine thing for old or young and should not he confined to one week. There are fil other weeks 111 the year it is just as import' ant to class as good book week. the idea of stressing one week in particular is to get us in the hab it and the habit once formed we will throughout tho year avail ourselves of tho vast number of good books offered us nnd thus broaden our minds and increase our knowledge. Continue the habit of last week and make it a year of delving in to that class 01 literature that means higher and nobler tilings. The port of Portlnnd has something of which to boast 111 facts and figures just given out placing thus port as second on the Paeifiu const in tonnage of cargo entered and cleared to and from foreign ports. It not only ranks next to San Francis co on this coast but ranks eighth of all the ports of the United states. Our weakness lies in tho fact our exports are so far in excess of our imports. It is encourag ing to know our imports are in creasing, but until this port has tho .service of ships given to oth er ports can we hope to attain the standing we deserve 111 im ports to this coast.
