Today surgery Is a very highly specialised

As In the medical profession so In another

The service of the modern funeral director

Tax Reduction
Judging from the wny Con
gress has tnken hold of tux re
duction it is n more rcspotisivo
ligislativc body thnn state legis
latures. Operating expenses of
the government for the year end
ing July 1, 1922, were 1,743 mil
lion dollnrs less than for the year
preceding. On top of this the na
tional debt was reduced 1,700
million dollnrs nud taxes to b
collected from the people rcdue
cd 800 million dollnrs. State gov
ernments have got to mnlce a sun
ilnr showing if the men who are
elected to state oil I cos and to the
legislnturc have nny bra ins. If
they hnve no brains to adapt the
state government to the reduced
incomes of farmers nud wages of
labor they will be severely cuss
cd. The political power entrust
cd to them by the people will be
taken back and there will be
more use of the recall than ever
was dreamed of. In over west
ern state ofllcinls are going into
power on promises to impose no
new taxes and to make material
reductions. Useless political func
tions that cannot show actual
services rendered for every dol
lar expended must go by the
board. I. N. H.
Flames which caught on the
roof of 1 the Peninsula school,
Lombard and Drummoiid streets,
Monday noon, while the 500 or
more pupils were at their homes,
were p.ut out by the prompt work
of W. 13. Pettys, principal of the
school, and Charles A. Idlers,
janitor, before the arrival of lire
apparatus. Sparks from a defec
tive Hue were believed to be the
cause. Warned by the cries of
pnsscrsby, Mr. Micro ami Mr.
Pettys climbed to the roof from
the attic and quenched the blaze
with hand extinguishers.

Increase Capital Stock
The expansion of business has
necessitated the increase in capi
tal stock of Honham & Currier,
Inc., from $5,000 to .$U5,00().
The new plans of this pioneer
firm contempnte taking in as
stockholders, Mr. Hose who has
been with the firm covering a
period of fifteen years, Irvin
Grontnehcy who has been reared
in St. Johns and known from boy
hood by original ltiorpcorntors
of the firm and L. V. Graves who
hns recently become a resident of
St. Johns and who has had sev
eral years' experience in the dry
goods line of the Miller store in
Salem.
With the increase in capital
and" the renewed interest of the
employees who become of the
firm the organization is prepared
to extend the business and move
forward with greater strides than
in the past
The plans include the enlarge
ment of the ready-to-wear stock
that will take in dresses, suits
and coats for women, girls and
children, and the extension of the
babies' wear to a regular baby's
wear department where every
thing a baby needs will bo pro
vided. This latter department will be
of especial interest to this locali
ty because of the inconvenience
of getting to the city with a baby
aid the advantage it wil ho of
Having all the needs supplied by
a firm that knows the wants r.ml
needs of the community
It is safe to s.iy that this firm
has prospered because of the
goo.'i will it holds of the many
fric'ids and customers who have
been loyal p.itrons for many
yews. It is not flutory or
Mretiling th-j imagitm'ii'ii any
when we sn, the firm enjoys the
hih'U'Ss of ninny who were iiul
children sent to the store by
their mothers fifteen or sixteen
years ago. This is a loyalty of
whieh the linn of Honham &
Currier may well ho proud and
no doubt is proud ns judged by
the largo numbers of young peo
ple who come into the store al
most daily.
