A. building the StJohns Community Club will meet. It will bo of a socinl nature and a largo attendance is desired. Mr. Puller of the Portland ltnilwav. Light & Power company is ex pected to be present to discuss better car service for St. Johns. All citizens interested in the Im provement of the service should mako it a point to bo in attend ance. ( Tho evening will bo an in teresting and entertaining one and well worth while. An cuter tainment and refreshments will bo on the program. So rcservo next Tuesday evening for Com munity Club. Tho communion services at the Community church last Sunday was vory well attended. The ser mon was given to the considering of place of tho Lord's Supper in our lives. Christian Endeavor was fairly well attended. The young people are going to in dulge in a roller skating party at Tiie Uaks Friday night. On Saturday tho L. A. S. will hold a cooking sale. At the meeting of tlic ollicers last 'Friday it was decided to uso tho little house next to tho church for extra room. The Primary Dept. of the S. S. will meet there. Social gath erings will In; taken Care of there and the Indies will also use it to Bcrvo their suppers in. The Her , mon topic for Sunday morning will be, "Towards Perfection," and in tho evening tho pastor will tnko for his theme, "Insulting God." Every man owes it to himself to attend church. At the St. Johns Christian church Sunday evening the "Whitney Boys' Chorus will have entire charge of the service. Har old Smith, one of the prominent members of the organization, will preside. Tom Dudley will make an- address, lie is one of the spokesmen of the chorus and has appeared before many im portant gatherings. Tho boys will present an elaborate pro gram nnd aside from the chorus numbers, Darrel Robinson will render a vocal solo. Darrel needs no introduction to a Portland audience. This young singer, r boy of thirteen years, has a phe nomeual robust tenor voice. The whole service is highly entertain ing and is intended to be spirit ually inspirational. Reported. A farmer sued a railway com pany for damages resulting from the death of one of his cows, the poor nniinal having been run into by a freight train. The engine driver was giving evidence. Tho lawyer for the farmer heckled tho witness on all kinds of tech uicalities, but kept reverting to his one pet question, which was; "Now tell me, was the cow on the linct" The engine-driver became peeved and, having been asked tho same question so often, an swered: "Well, if you want me to tell the real truth, the cow was bathing in the stream Toiler side of thu bank. Hut the engine saw it, left the rails, dashed over the bank, and, landing clean on the cow, strangled it to death with out a word." We visit every mi.rried woman in Altooua could have been up to the Indian camp Tuesday night and watched tho women do the work while the men sat around and smoked. There were no complaints, no "John, bring some water, cut some wood," and oth er commands that every white married man is familiar with. The KipiawH did all the work and never once did they complain. The building nintcrinl says, is the only they kind use, ho that is cheap. Several people who went to southern California a few months ago to find climate have returned to St. Johns. They know now j that there is as much climate in Oregon as there is in California and th.c Oregon variety is quite superior. They learned also thali wc have more resources and more ; beautiful scenery here. Now that the season has arriv ed when It is no longer necessary to hoc in the garden the home owner could be entirely happy if I some one would invent a painless method of putting up stoves and putting wood in the basement. Suggestion for a mentality test : If an automobile going at a speed of ten miles per limit eotdd cross n high bridge at St. Johns in live minutes, what would he the length of the bridge? Answer in two minutes. Not all of the smiling men you have met this week are candi dates for oilicc. Some of them may bo owners of wood yards. The desirability of sites for in dustrial plants here, where rail and water meet, will attract man ufacturers more and more, and that increased industrial activity on the Lower Peninsula would mean continued prosperity for St. .Johns is easily understood by anyone who is not a hopeless bonehead. The man who has faith in St. doliiis as a guild nlnee in which to establish a permanent home is not deceived. Christopher C. llingel died at his home, !)()!! North Smith ave nue, Sept. 10th, of dropsy. He was born at Middlotown, Mary land, Dee. 14, IStU. and came west at the age of 'Jtf. residing in and around Spokane until about eight years ago, when he came to St. Johns where ho has since re sided. He was engaged in the to bacco and confectionery business at tho corner of Alta and Jersey streets for a number of years. His wife and one daughter, Mrs. Annie M. Stockman of Middle town. Md., survive. The funeral services were held in the Chris tian church on Wednesday. Dr. 11. F. Jones olllcinting. Interment at Hose City cemetery, the St. .1 oh us Cudcrtaking Co. in charge. Baker the managing committee is acquainting the people with the constitutional amendment which will be on the November ballot and which provides for the city of Portland taxing itself in the extent of $:t,()00,()l)0 to hold the Oregon Exposition. Pre viously the plan of a state wide tax was tried, but the amendment on the ballot, if passed, will not call for the taxing of a single foot of property outside of Port land. Tho managing committee and thousands of others interest ed in holding the exposition point out that untold benefits will ac crue to the entire state through holding of the Fair. Figures show that California has 22 peo ple to the square mile, Washing ton 20 and but 8 reside in Oregon to the square mile. It Ls held that the exposition will bring thousands of people to the state, that many will settle here and the resources of the state will he developed. The " 11)25 Kaposi ion Special," a special train car rying 125 Portland business men will visit Kastern Oregon towns starting September 18 and ex plain features of the campaign and exposition. The street railway company is extending its trucks along Ivil lingsworth avenue from Pied mont lunetiou to Union avenue, with the view, it is said, of run ning the St. Johns ears through to Portland. The intention of advertising St. Johns and tho Peninsula dis trict, during the Lewis & ( ark fair next year, is receiving some attention. The Hurlhcrt Hros. have dis posed of their interest, in the West Coast Laundry company and have retired. The St. .Johns Laud company is having Fillinore'stroct (now Wil lamette boulevard) cleared of .stumps, and will otherwise im prove it for several blocks. On Christmas day Couch fc Co. presented each of their employes with a handsome toilet set. Miss Anna Thurlow has platted a live acre tract in North St. Johns uud has put it on the mar kot. Appreciating this convenience it would bo to the public, the postmaster has decided to keep the postofllce open for tho deliv ery of mail between the hours of 1(1 and 11 o'clock every Sunday morning commencing January 1. The action is entirely voluntary on tho pari of the postmaster. The Title (luimuitre & Loan company has purchased the lira zee tract, lying east of St. Johns Heights Addition and embracing sixty-two acres. This is a valua ble tract of land, and will be the location or some beautiful homes in time. Superintendent ('nrtor of the woolen mills exhibited last week the llrst samples of woolen fab rics, showing the texture, color and borders. The samples were blanket goods. MeXiven died at the family residence, 318 Ilarlfflin street, last Friday mornings after an illness of nearly a year of per nicious anemia, llo was born in Onario, Canada, in 1852, Mr. and Mrs. MeXiven were married in North Dakota in 1882 and with their family came to St. Johns 16 years ago. where they had since resided. Surviving him are his wife. Mrs. Hertha McXivea, two sons. A. V. MeXiven of Portland and John C. MeXivon of Centra lia. Wash.: live daughters, Mr. Addison Kilgore of Yofletnite, Cal.; Jennie, Verda, Jessie and Horl ha MeXiven, residing with the mother. Funeral service were held from the Christian church, of which he wan a mm- j her, Sunday at 2 :!10 p. jm Dr. H. F. Jones omcmling. Interment in Columbia cemetery.
