While the com mittee on community house is not yet ready to submit a definite re port, it was stated that plans are under way to sccuro permanent quarters for the Club. They wcro informed that it was on account of tho water pressure here. A committee consisting of Thos. Autzen, A. E. Jones and D. H. Knowlcs was appointed to take up tho matter of pressure with Commissioner Mann and en deavor to have it corrected. It was stated that tho project of a high bridgo at St. Johns may bo placed on the ballot at tho No vember election. Interesting re marks were made by Rev. D. E. Noursc, A. E. Jone.i, 1). II. Ex. NEKTIKS ROOEHS. urntture tore An Early Prediction By Willinm W. Goodrich in the St. Johns Kcviow Dec. lfi, 11)01: Editor Review: Often nm T written to nhotit my home town, St. Johns, nnd its environs. I have to write in reply the only one explanation apropos thereto, to wit: That St. Johns is destin ed to he the New York of the "West, i. c. the Pacitle Coast Whyf We have tho point adja cent to the best harbor on the coast, the Columbia and Willam ette rivers. Vessels at all stands ot the tide, at all hours of the day, can dock, and the deeping of the bar at ocean side allows free egress and ingress, no matter how Old Boreas howls or what combing waves their white cups break. Can any other harbor boast as niuchf Tho writer has visited them all. Again, t tie Col umbia and Willamette valleys are the natural channels for the I'a cific trade. The vast interests that will center at St. Johns and radiate therefrom will hnvo car riers of peace on every sea ; soon will wo see tho iralhmt tars of St. Johns' sailing vessels owned and manned by St. Johns capital and friends, singing the larboard watch ahoy through the isthmian canal, and St. Johns lumber, flour and other exports in Now York harbor and Loudon and tho capitals of the old and new world. These thinus are coming. St. Johns, situated as is New- York city, is the onlv proper place for the vast manufacturing industries that will and must lo cate hero. Ereedom of the water front gives it the preference over all other harbors. Up to five or six ho thinks them the wis est individuals on earth. Ho quotes their sayings nnd consid ers their opinions Hunt with the preference given to the maternal wisdom. By the time he is old enough to take his hath alone he thinks over the matter and de cides that mother isn't as smart as he thought she was, but father knows a good many things nud cites to himself their respective opinions on siuimniing, fishing and going to the barber versus maternal hair clipping. About the time he sneaks dad's razor to his own room and experiments a little with the fuzz on his chin he concludes father is a well mean ing duller enough, but mother knows less than nothing. Five years later lie pities the ignor ance of the whole world and espe cially that of the old folks. At ill), about the time he wants to borrow money front dad to cover some of his financial mistakes ho thinks father's and mother's ad vice is pretty good sometimes. Ten or fifteen years later, when ho has a lad or two of his own,the old boy begins to wonder why ho never appreciated tho old folks. At sixty, when his parents are dead, he idealizes them as the greatest characters of their age and spends hours telling his chil dren how implicitly ho always heeded and obeyed the slightest wish or command of his parents and how he over and always took their advice in the crisiscs of life. Efficiency Vital to Motorist "In securing topnoteh elllcieney man and motor ear are alike, lloth rely solely upon physical Illness," declares Itnymnud F. Fisher, local dealer in Duraiit four and six cylinder models. "An automobile, like the human body, can be depended upon to work long and faithfully only when every part of its incchniii eal anatomy is functioning prop erly. Each part depends vitally upon the other for its working ef ficiency. If one fails, the entire meehaeiiical unit is disturbed. You can usually tell whether a man is physically lit by his ap pearance and actioiiH. Not ho with a motor car". .Mechanical value cannot be judged entirely by appearance. To assure me chanical dependability all parts must be made of material of uni formly high quality that will en able them to work together with consistent smoothness. Certain units of a motor ear must he made from unusual metal. Again, there are others that must possess extraordinary strength. To know that each unit has the nec essary qualities; that it will with stand severe use and that it will bear up splendidly under unusual strain is a problem that Duraiit engineers have successfully coped with since the beginning of the automotive industry. Thoir long scientific researching and cNperi meuting has produced tho Tubu lar backbone with which every Duraiit car is equipped. It is a steel cylinder riveted at both ends to the second and third frame cross members so that both side members nr held rigid and parallel. It forces the springs and not the body to absorb the shocks of the roails, thereby re dueing creaks and preserving the body in good condition even after a long period of use. This tubu lar backbone is only nn of the singular Duraiit contributions to motor ear ellieieney. Every part of a Durant ear is thoroughly tested, and tho performance of every car is proved before it leaves tho factory, thereby assur ing every buyer ellieieney and satisfaction." rT Vmi -ivir. w rea&una ui awning a &&DURANT, after you hunt RAYMOND F.
