Celebrates 87th Birthday
Mrs. R. S. Zierden quietly ob
sorved hur 87th birthay miniver
sary. Mrs. Rebecca S. Zierden (Mrs.
Nicholas Zierden) of 119 Enst
Scriner avenue, Willinmsport,
Pa., was born in 1835 in St.
George, New Brunswick, Cnnuda,
and was the youngest o seven
children of Mr. and Mrs. Karl
Spafford. In 1GI18 her paternal
forefathers, John and Mary
Spafford, emigrated from York
shire, England, and settled in
Rowley, Essex county, Massnehii'
setts. The descendents of these
were some of the valiant "Green
Mountain Hoys" of Revolution
ary .fame. Mrs. Zierden is one
of the seventh generation of this
John and Mary Spnlford. Her
maternal forefathers were of Hie
line of English Stewarts, also of
tho Prince of the House of Or
migo (each family giving Or
ange as a name to their eldest
son). These forcfolks settled in
tho colonies (Connecticut). At
the outbreak of the Revolution
ary War they were too loyal to
take up arms against the king,
ho leaving lands and cattle, mi
grated to St. George, New Ilnins
wick, to the king's domain, where
Mrs. Zierden was born. She has
one daughter, Mrs. I'Ved Dryniui
living in Portland, Oregon, also
two neiccs, Mrs. Harold J look
ham, fi'Jfi E. Mohawk street, and
Mrs. Horatio G. Freeman, at 708
Hudson street. Mrs. Zierden
spent the day quietly receiving
the hearty congratulations of a
largo number of friends and rel
atives. Mrs. Zierden has visited
St. Johns a number of times and
has a number of friends and rela
tives living here. Kopoi-lcd.
From the shores of broad Colum
bia, (Father waters of tho West)
To the Siskiyou's snowy summits
Where the mountain eagles
nest;
From I'aifin's booming surf
breaks,
To the winding of tho Snake
There's a laud whoso tranquil
splendor
Hursts on mountain, plain and
lake.
It'u a laud of peace and promise,
Fairy laud of golden dream;
Where the purple twilights lin
ger And the Western sunsets gleam
Potent land, whoso power and
beauty
Hand in hand sweep on anil on;
Magic laud your truth enhaiiees,
Oregon my Oregon.
