Mrs. J. Mitchell and Mrs. David Smith have both left the hospital mrs. ueiss, iurs. uurnnt and Barbara Smith arc all doing nicely, We arc all boosting for our loca mills, manufacturing plants, bank and business houses. Now let us say a word for our hospital. We need a hospital in St. Johns; it has been the cry for the past few years 1 lie Peninsula Hospital is one of the nicest and best equipped smal hospitals1 in Portland. It can take care of any emergency; has an up to-cialc surgery and X-ray room very competent and pleasant trainee: nurses. Our Union will no doubt profit much by hav ing these sisters with us. We also had Miss Kavauatigh of our local hospital, there, who talked a few minutes about her splendid hospi tal, an institution of which every member of our union is very proud, mid one that deserves all our sup port. Mrs. Nourse nnd Mrs. Cnlli sou each pleased the ladies with vocal .selections. Mrs. Atchison, assisted by her two ilaughters-lu-law, and Mrs. Williams, served very dainty nnd delicious refresh ments. We always welcome visitors nt any of our meetings. Reported. Mrs. W. S. Packard of Canatf dnigua, New York, has been visit ing with her sister, Mrs. David, at the home of her niece, Mrs. Vin son, on South Ivnnlioc street. Mrs. Packard returned to the home of her daughter In Seattle Tuesday, where she is spending the Winter. A Modern Samaritan A mau went down to Jericho to buy a can of beans. He had one dollar, fifty cents secreted in his jeans. He needed all the money, for he earned it threshing wheat; he knew his frau and youngsters had to have some beans to int. When half way to Jericho he met a stick up guy who quickly snatched his pocket book and lammedhim in the eye, The stickup artist took his cont; he was n trifle rude, and left him lying by the road half dead and nearly nude. A priest, a Lcviteand a clerk went whizzing by the road. They saw the man; they saw the wounds and where the blood had flowed. They honked their horn and hollered out as they went scooting by. They opened out the cutout and threw 'cr into high. The chairman of the city board, an alderman and a cop all saw the victim lying there but none of them would stop. A barber from Samaria (whose name and street address were overlooked next morning by the writers of the rcss) passed by aud taw the in tired man, took out his first-aid kit, and said: "I am sorry, neigh bor; can't I help you out u bit?" le put witch hazel on the hurts bound up the aching head, then packed his man to Jericho nnd put !ii in sate in bed. He tipped the bcl boy mid the clerk and said: "In this hotel please keep this injured mau until he is completely well. Just send the bill to my address mid I will pay you a I, nlthotigh may not have the needed dough un til some time next Pall." Most Porttauders, nnd in fact many of the producers themselves do not re alize the volume to which ttie di rect export movement of Oregon apples has grown nor the rapid de velopment of the traffic. The first box of apples ever to be shipped direct from Portland to the Ku- 1 . ropenu mnriceis was loatieu on a steamer here nd longer ago than the latter part of last October. Ac tual exports of apples direct to Eu rope in refrigerated steamer space this season have nmouutcd to H71.887 boxes. Seven big steam ships have carried this quantity, and before this season's apple crop is exhausted, three more steamers will load apples for Kurope in their refrigerator holds and one will load them for the Atlantic coast. At the morning service of the Community Church last Sunday those present enjoved a solo, "Hold Thou My Hand," by Ruth Weiss. Miss Weiss has a very sweet voice nnd will be heard from ngitiu in this role. Christian Ku deavor was well attended. The Young Peoples' Chorus made its first appearance nt the evening service. Next Sunday morning the sermon thought will be, -The Man With a Hunting Heart." Mrs. J. 0. Hniley will sing. There will ntso be n special number by the choir. The Young Peoples' Chorus will lead the song service in the evening mid will also slug n special piece. The annual meeting of the church will be held February Gth. New officers will be elected.
