Lynch from his (laughter, Miss Gladys Lynch, who has been a language teacher for a number of years at Highland Park High School, Detroit, Michigan. She sailed on the City of Paris with a number of teachers from New York on the 34th of June to spend her vacation. Paris, July 14th. Dear Papa: Was so glad to get your letter. It was the fint I had re ccived in Paris. Wc are having au ideal time; it is a hundred times better than wc had planned. Usu ally things turn out to be the oppo site. We arc in a lovely French home. The exterior is gray stone, I with many gables. The court is just off from the dining room. Part of it is now used as a pri vate school for girls up to about 14. The Docteur is sort of supervisor of the school; he does not practice, but is very wealthy. He was an officer iu the French army. Mrs. Bcnassen was married at Groslcy in a quaint church. There were just 12 of u.. at the tea; we sat about two hours at the tea table. Mrs. Iicnasscu told us about the war; how th chateau was used as a hospital for 80 to too soldiers; how at one time the Germans were just 8 (5 miles kilometers from the chateau. She had everything in a suit case, ready to leave. X'.x-President and Mrs Wilson were entertained at this same chateau. ROGERS, Pertaining to Wives Wives appear to be a kind of n uccessary evil, A man can neither be happy with one nor without one As long as a man has a wife he feels that he would be perfectly rccon ciied to losing her, yet the minute he loses her he never rests until he hunts up another one. Whether this is owing to some peculiarity of wives or to lack of intelligence in min is not known. The first wile was named Eve, and she was invented for the purpose of keeping Adam from being lonesome. She did this by her curiosity and by getting him into trouble, a plan every wife has followed from that day to this. 1 tns seems to indicate lack of orig inality iu wives, but the fact rc mains that as soou as a man gets married he is kept busy answering his wife s questions as to where he has been, what he means by coining home at that hour of the morning, what makes his breath smell so queer, etc, and in trying to douce curtain lectures, bill col lectors and other unpleasantness thnf he has no leisure in which to be distrait or cnuuied, as wc say iu table d'hote French. A wife is cer tainly a cure (or that tired feeling. Most of the hustlers you sec arc married men, They have to be I Whether a man captured his wife or she shanghaied him is one of the questions that he debates fiotu his wedding day to the day of his fu neral. At first he is perfectly cer tain that he is a large, tall, masterly man who turned n timid bird by his magnetic personality until he coaxed it to nestle on his breast. Later on he' begins to think that he was about the easiest gink that ever bought Brooklyn bridge, nud how he fell for a con spiel worked by u girl baby, and he blushes every time he thinks of the way he wnu shillicd along to the nltnr. Which accounts for the extraordinary number of wives iu every community. The peaches among wives are generally the choice of old .men who are .able to afford luxury.
