the Motion Picture World, the
Magazine Writers and the Pref-s
Ansociations that the World
will be told the story of the
Parade of a Million Hoses. The
1921 Hose Festival Hoard has
been organized and President
Otto W. Mielke has appointed
Henry W. Kent Executive Sec
retary of the Portland Service
League, as Chairman of the
Floral Parade Committee. Mr.
Kent has named thoGOOO ollicers
of tho League as his associates
on this committee which means
a successful parade. Detail
plans will be given at an early
date.
Every boy and girl in Port
land will bu asked to plant a
Rose Festival Garden. Special
prices on seeds, plants and bulbs
will bo given by tho public spir
ited dealers and seed growers
through tho ollicers of the
League, to all ot tho hoys anu
girl Garden Growers, borne
of the big hearted citizens who
have no children of their own
are adopting one of thoncighor's
children for tho purpose of get
ting interest in this splenukl
endeavor.
Three boys and girm in each
group of tnn neighbors, approxi
mately, will be given llrst, sec
ond and third prizes for the
three best Gardens. This will
mean that about 3G bom and
girls will ride in the Precinct
Cars that aro to bo decorated by
the people of tho precinct with
llowera grown in the precinct
by tho boys and girls of tho pre
cinct. Assistance of the men
and women of tho precinct will
bo permitted, but on a score of
points the hoy or girl who does
all of the work will gain in
points. ThiB week'H message
is: "Plant Sweet Peas at once
and in order to be sure to get
them to bloom by Juno 8th."
Mr. Kay Gill, the chairman of
thu Seed Committee, gives the
following directions: Dig a
trench 18 inches deep, smash up
a dozen old cans, throw in tho
bottom of tho trench with a
mixture of six inches of soil
On ton of this lay six inches o
horse manure or straw. On top
of this two inches sifted tin
sprinkled with fertilizing mix
tu re. rake in then another tw
inches dirt sprinkled witli th
fertilizer and continue this pro
cost until tho mixed soil is about
IS inches above the lovel. Plant
the Sweet Peas about one inc
b?lov tho surface. Tho Peas
should bo soaked in lukewarm
watrr over night, not longer, i
order to hasten growth. This
rulo is for a trench about 15 feet
in length. Plant in warm spot
