Tim Hkvirw Is entered nt post office
in Portland, Oregon, ns mtill mutter
of the second class under the Act of Con
gress of Mnfch i, 1879,
Ono of the most important
developments in recent months
is the announcement that ar
rangements have been perfected
for financing u houso building
campaign in this district. It has
been realized for sovornl years
that lack of good houses has
been seriously delaying the
growth of all of this part of the
I'oniiiBula. Homes for the peo
ple employed hero have not
boon provided to keep pace
with the expansion of the indus
trios and public works in thi
vicinity.
Appreciating the need for
more gotd houses the business
men of the cntiro district have
banded together to take steps
to relieve the shortage. A stock
company has been organized un
der the name of the Peninsula
Houso Building Corporation,
practically all of the industries
and leading business houses, as
well as a number of the profes
sional men, having subscribed
for shares. The capital stock of
$25,000 is to be used as a revolv
ing fund, whatever proceeds ac
crue from the sale of the houses,
going back into the fund ho that
more can ho built. It is under
stood that if any profits accrue
they will also bo turned back -into
the fund until the shortage of
housing facilities is relieved.
The houses to be built will be
of several different types and
will bo the very best that can be
built for the price asked for
them. The company will have
tho advantage of buying mate
rials in quantities and can save
in other ways through tho co
operation of tho stockholders,
who are tdl leading business
man.
Tlis is u step in the right di
rection, (iood houses for the
people already employed hero aru
as much needed as new indus
tries that will bring in more peo
pie. It is especially' gratifying
to learn that tlio new company
has no intention of building
cheap shacks or rows of unsight
ly "factory houses." Kvidontly
its organizers appreciate tho fact
that tho people employed in the
industries in this neighorhood
are prosperous and want houses
that they and the community
can be proud of.

An offer of $!I2,,'M0 for the
Lnddit Strong tract of forty-four
acres in the St, Johns district
was authorized by tho city
council this morning as a means
of acquiring a park situ in that
section of the city and settling
of controversy that has boon
raging for several months. Com
missioner S. C. Tier, who intro

work will be started at onco to
