Had a Delightful Outing
J. S. McKinney has returned
from a twelve flay vacation
trip that was highly interesting
and enjoyable. He was in com
pany with Mrs. McKinney, Mr.
and Mrs. Harry Palm. Mr. and
Mrs. George Newberry ano
daughter, Mr. and Mrs. David
Patton, John Patton, William
Potton and Mrs. Mary Campbell.
Tho party motored to the Little
White Salmon river and were
joined theroby aparty.of sixteen
others. After spending three
days there where they enjoyed
several meals of mountain trout,
the St. Johns party continued on
to tho Big White Salmon river
and then on to 1 rout Lgke. They
visited tho ico caves near Trout
Lake, which Mac says is won
derful, with just a small hole
opened up in tho earth at the
entrance and the cold air belch
ing up that causes one to shiver.
The Bides and floor are covered
with ice. It boing a government
reserve, the government has
provided a lovely camping ground
with tables and other con
vonioncca. They stayed two days
at this place and visited whatis
known as tho Government
Mcadows.tt beautiful sight with
several hundred ncrosof open
meadows at tho foot of what is
known as Huckleberry Mountain.
At this place Mac says they
found deer tracks so thick that
one would think tho fields had
been pastured with n band of
shcop, but tho government does
not auow pasturing on this land
and it is a Btronghold for deer.
After two days' Btay nr. tho ico
envo they motored to whnt is
known as tho lava caves and un
ilnrtrrninul Hvor. Tlmv found n
place that had apparently been a
envo in tho earth with a stairway
loading to tho bottom. After
reaching tho bottom they were
in entiro darkness, in fact so
dark that a lantern could only bu
distinguished a few feet distant.
From what thoy could leorn no
ono has yet been nblo to tell its
origin or find tho end of it. They
followed tho river underground
until thoy becamo ufrnid of be
coming lost and decided to re
turn to tho surface. Tho river
is about forty feet in width and
