Portland Manufacturing Co. ? MANUFACTURERS OF Panels, Berry Boxes, Coffee Drums, Ex-1 celsior Grape Boxes, Egg Case Stock, and all kinds of Veneer ; : FACTORY, FOOT The project of a high bridge nrross the Willamette at St. Johns is now takinp on definite shape. A number of petitions have been nut in circulation rGnuust- inp; the county commissioners to "at onco tako the necessary steps toward the construction of a hiph bridge across tho Wilamette river at St. Johns, tho East ap proach to be upon a suitable lo cation between Burlington street and St. Johns avenue, to be de finitely decided by the engineers, and tho West approach where it may be found mo3t suitable." Not a citizen and taxpayer of the peninsula in particular should refuse to sign. A high bridgo here would bo of immense value to the peninsula and the west side as well, to say nothing of tho Tualatin valley just beyond tho hill back of Whitwood Court. As the connecting link of a irrand scenic route it would rank with the famous Co umbia Hiirhwnv. What a beautiful circuit it would make to auto from I'ortlund on tho west side, cross tho high Urirlge and return on the delight ful Willamette boulevard. Tho expense of tho structure would be less than oilier bridges across the Willamette coat, because the most expensive item, the draw, would be eliminated. It would cut off at least a couplo of miles in distance to the business center of Portland, and no doubt eventually street cars would operate oer it. Petitions may bo found at this office. Mr. Stearns is of the opinion that the White Salmon Valley has a wonderful future ahead of it and predicts that it will become in time the lending and most popular tourist resort of the Northwest. Ho was amazed at tho vast water power that t is going to waste in the While Salmon river. At tho head of the valley ho saw thousands of acres of land as level as a floor, and the whole valley was a con stantly changing panorama of beautiful scenery.
