ST REVIEW VOLUME 1G ST. JOHNS, PORTLAND, OHEGON, FRIDAY, JUNE 25, 1920. NUMBER 33 Boosts for High Bridge Here Mr. Editor of the St. Johns Review: I noticed an article in your paper written by Uncle Joe. It was written in a very quaint, old fashioned way, but tho plat of his subject is worthy of more than a passing thought. It ought to cnirago the most serious thought of the business men of a crowing nnd prosperous city. One of the best things that you have said in your papor was to mention a high bridge to span tho Willamette river at St. Johns. The ferry was 0. K. in its day and was a great boon to tho people. But it is inadequate to tho travel and is becoming moro and more so. This is the era of uutomobiles and air ship9 and if the people of this city expect to keep up or abreast with the timo3 they must meet and co operate with the demands of the public, whatever the cost. 1 un derstand that itco3ts the taxpay ers of this county about twenty- five thousands dollars a year to run the ferry, to Bay nothing of about twenty thousand dollars for repairs. Give us a high bridge connecting the East Side with the West and then extend An Extensive Tax Drive The following statement is issued by Collector of Internal RevomiOj Milton A. Miller: In this, as in every other section of the country, there will bo con ducted during the next two months an extensive tax drive for the collection of delinquent' sales and other miscellaneous! taxes, such as the so-called lux ury tax, the soft drink tax. the admission tax, tho manufac-i turer'a tax, tho tax on jewelry and works of art, nnd the tax on toilet articles and proprietary medicines. Reports of laxity on the part of dealers and other persons responsbilo for the re turn and collection of these taxes have reached the Liureau of in ternal Kevenue irom many sources To remedy this condi tion, a large force of revenue of ficers will be put in the field, and'it is expected to result in the collection of million of dol lars in delinquent taxes. Infor mation from the Sales Tax Unit of tho Bureau of Internal Reve nue is that many dealers in soft drinks and ice cream either urc keeping no record of the amount of tax collections f rom such sales, Fcssondcn Btreot .to .intersect n- fi' f m. mrnni i inmifriolont with the county road leading to or incorrect. My nuto 'tis of thee, short road to poverty, of thee I chant. I blew a pile of dough oik you three years ago; now'you re I fuse to go, or won't or can't. (Thru town and countryside you were my joy nnd pride, a happy ! day. I loved tho gaudy hue, ,tho nice white tires new, but you're down and out lor true, in every way. To thee.old rattlehox, came many bumps nnd knocks, for thee I grieve. Badly tho top is torn, frayed are the seats and worn: tho whooping cough affects thy horn, I do believe. Thy perfume swells the breeze, while good folks choke and wheeze as we pass. by. I paid for then a price, 'twould buy a mansion twice; now everybody's yelling "ice" I wonder why? Thy motor has the grip, thy spark plug has tho pip and woe is thine. 1, too, have juffered chills, fatigue nnd kindred ills, endeavoring to pay my bills, since thou wcrt mine. Sho teaches the Dunning System of improved Study, nnd it was wonderful to seo tiny children five to ton years old who had studied from fivo months to one year do problems that grownups who hnd studied music for years could not do. Transposition strikes terror into tho hearts of most musicians, but one littlo boy transposed his picco in any major or minor tho audience called, which was littlo short of marvelous. Mrs. Hnwlinson used tho most difficult combina tion of rhythms she could pos sible find nnd tho children de fined them without one mistake. Melodic dictation wns another feature. Tho toachnr playctl on the piano u melody and a child twelve years of ago repro duced it on tho blackboard, sho never having heard it before. This showed tho vnluo of ear training in modern music study. A trio played from memory by fivo years olds elicited much applause. Mrs. Dunning was there in person nnd gave a short address to the children nnd told them that after studying for years in. tiuropo slio returned to New York to tench just advanced (pu pils, but in her work she found tho so-called advanced pupils was woefully lucking in tho funda mental principles, and that Is how sho originated this delight ful Dunning System. She was presented with u beautiful bou quet of orchids. After tho pro gram was completed tho young performers were given gorgeous baskets of flowers by their ad miring friends nnd relatives Mrs. Kuwlinsonnlso wns preset! ted witli a uoautiful baakeL o flowers. Then followed the most welcome part of tho program viewed from tho standpoint of tho children, and that was a party on tho stage.
