VOLUME 16
ST. JOHNS, PORTLAND, OREGON, FRIDAY, JUNE 11, 1920.
NUMBER 31
St. Johns
The first announcement of the
1920 Chautauqua program in
dicates that the attractions to bo
presented arc of the same high
standard which has character
ized Ellison-Whito programs in
the past. Music, lecture and
entertainment lovers apparently
have much in store for them
durintr the week of July 20-26
the chautauqua dates for St.
Johns. Lecturers of prominence
arc: Judge George D. Alden of
Massachusetts; Judgo Fred G.
Bale of Ohio; Carlton Chamber
layne, prominent editor of New
York; Julius Caesar Nypho. n
brilliant young Atnoninn with
a spectacular costumed lecture
on the Orient; G. Whitfield
Ray, F. R. G. S., for fourteen
years on exploration work in
South Americu, and E. B. Fish,
tho famed foe of agitators in
the Northwest. A feature at
traction which vnries from the
regular lino of Chautauqua
ovents is the production of the
big New York Dramatic success,
"Kindling." by tho Maurice
Browne Players on tho fifth
night. After several years of
band-concerts this will undoubt
edly be a welcomo change to
most Chautauqua "fan 3."
Tho music gives promise of
an interesting week. Mary
Adol Hays, the Now York so-
E ratio whom Ellison-White
rought to the South and West
in 1919, is to return again. This
year she comes us soloist witli
Raul Porcira, tho Portugese
violinist and his string Quintet.
An outstanding musical ovent
rests in the announcement of tho
Royal Welsh Lady Singers of
Wales, Great Britain. This com
pany has toured tho world and is
a sterling singing organization.
On tho second day n native
Alaskan girl who has set the
musical world talking is presen
ted in tho person of Lona Laska
a momber of tho Alaska Duo.
Ihe Purnclls is unother musical
company coming with fino re
commendations from tho East.
Tho closing attractions of tho
wcok is a doublo program known
ns "An Evening in tho South
Seas," featuring a group of nn
tivo Maori Singers, tho only or
ganization of its kind in Amorica,
with a lecture on Now Zealand
by Loiln Blomfield, writer and
lecturer of thnt country, illus
trated with official government

MRS. FRANK A. RICE
Announces that she has received from Carrie Louise Dunning a
diploma as an exponent of the Dunning System of Im
proved Musib Study, which includes the Faelten prin
ciples concentration and the Leschetzky Technic.
Formed into classes pupils are taught by musical characters and
rhythm sticks. An'ingeniously constructed keyboard with graud
staff attached, simplifies notation by uniting these two important
factors.
Each difficulty is presented in such a thorough manner that
a child of ten or twelve years can master transposition, scale
building, melody writing by dictation, the Dominant Seventh
and Modulation. The written work teaches the student that music,
as a language, they must learn to write, as well as interpret.
The muscles of fingers, wrists and arms are strengthened by
table technic; ear training and sight reading forms apart of every
lesson.
Mrs. Rice will be glad to show you BY APPOINTMENT
the especially made apparatus for teaching this system which in
eludes one class lesson and one private lesson each week, making
a far more economical way of acquiring a musical education.

Manufacture of the new Wolf
link saw for falling and bucking
timber has been commenced nt
the plant of the Peninsula Iron
Works; St. Johns. The new
saw, which was invented by C.
Wolf of this city, is electrically
driven and tho entire outfit
weighs but eighty-four pounds.
A demonstration of the saw was

sula Iron Works recently. A
twenty-oight inch dry log was
cut in fifty seconiis with tho
links traveling at the speed of
1050 fcot a minute. In the de
sign of the Wolf saw. special
attention was paid to the link
pin, heretofore a weakness of
link saws. In tho Wolf saw,
tho pins work in hardened steel
bushings. I hey are oiled
through felt insert, which auto
matically feed oil from tho frame.
Vibration is practically absent in
the newly inventnu device.
Even with the deflection of tho
blade, of ono inch, while travel
ing n n horizontal position, the
saw perfonncd faultlessly. The
saw is revcrsiblH and cuts equally
well in both directions. This
feature gives tho teeth longer
lifo than would be possiblo if
tho saw wtrj run in only ono
direction. Another feature
of tho Wolf saw is elimination
of danger of tho stiw breaking
whilo in (Deration. Iho link
pins arc so utronsg that tho mo
tor has not sufficient power to
broak them. In enso of tho
saw becoming fouled in tho cut,
tho overload causes tho fuse to
blow out. stopping tho motor.
The Peninsula Ironworks is ono
of tho most thoroughly equipped
foundries and machine shops on
tho Coast. Tlfo company manu
factures tho Peninsula power
log loader for motor trucks, which
tins gained great favor among
timber operators during tho past
year. The device is opcrutcd
from the driver's seat, allowing
tho operators to stand entirely
clear at all times. Being com
pact, it takes up no loading or
carrying spaco whatever. Logs
may bo handled directly over
loader, or from behind, iho
Poninsula power log loader loads
loss with tho engine of tho truck.
Only tho driver and a helper aro
renuired to ouerato it. By tho
use of this loador tho shifting
of donkey engines is unnecessary,
as tho truck nicks up logs any
whero nlong tho road. Telegram
