He believed concerted action would do much toward securing it. Dr. Borden urged tho necessity of good, big playgrounds, equip ped with swimming tank and community house. He believed. ho said, thnt playgrounds mid hcathful recreation were tho greatest determents from crime, that if tho younger monibers of tho community had such nlaco to Bponu thoir spare lime tho com munity would bo vastly tho bet ter for it. Sergeant Crano. who proved to bo an after dinner speaker as well as a vocalist, told of his coming to St. Johns. of tho better service ho hoped to help usher in for tho St. Johns district, that ho was vitally interested in tho progress and well boing of St. Johns und would do all in his power to ndvanco its welfare Ho said St. Johns was undoubtedly des tined to become a big place, that playgrounds keep many boys out of jail, and ho advocated concerted action in securing those thinus thut St. Johns still stands in need of. T. J. Monahan made a few interesting remarks concerning the long ago. when Messrs. Thompson and Powers camo to St. Johns in 1002 seeking a site for the woolon mill after fire had destroyed tho Sellwood mill: told how somo of the citizens had stormod and criticised when Mr. Monnhnn, then a membor of tho first fat. Johns city council, proposed vacating part of the street for the erection of the mill, oven though the street was of no benefit to tho city. He told what n Godaond tho woolen mills had later proven to bo to this community.
