A '.ical Conclusion It Can't Be Done McKINNEY'S BARGAINS Editor St. Johns Review: As one of the employes of the City Hall, would you nllow me space in your valuable medium to present a few facts relative to the present financial condition of the city as it pertains to the business of which I have charge? When Dr. T. L. Perkins was city commissioner he prevailed upon mo to accept the position of Stationery Clerk, the duties of which arc to purchase the printing and stationery supplies for the city. Having had(prac tical experience in this line 1 concluded to accede to his re quest with reluctance, owing to the small salary, as it was paying only the munificent, sum of $98 per month. When Mr. Pior succeeded him as commis cionor I was requested to remain, and several months ago the sal aries of most of the employee were raised $5 to $15 per month, my salary now being $liy. per month, which, according to the high cost of living, is equal to $50.00 a month ii years ago. During the time 1 have buon conducting this branch of the City Hall I may conscientiously state to the public that through my knowlegdo of the business I have saved the city more than double my salary by buying right and according to business methods. Now what 1 want to impress upon the public mind is, that my case is only one out of many where the salary paid is not commensurate for the rc uponsibility attached or for the required knowledge necessary to fill the positions. I find that tho salaries paid herein IhuCity Hall arc beggarly. Of course the people will naturully nay "if you don't like it, quit." In my caso Yob, I havo already sent in my resignation to taki of feet the firt ol the year and will try henceforth to earn more than a bftro living. Tho taxpayers of the city should know their MorvantH are worthy of their hire and untitled to f.l f same mmiinuration as if .o' :ii.;r for private IhihIiiohh firm and furthermore, when they tho oily in constantly iucre.i'i'iig in population, it stand to reason that more rev cnuo muNt ho required, espe cially at this time, tlinn fivo'yoarH ago. Kvory dollar voted for tho nronioDH of the city means a hundred fold in years to come, nud ivhon the meusuro comes up for an increase of taxes from !) to 11 mills on November 12 it bchoovoH every citizen to voto "Yes," and if you are wiHe and want to sou your city grow don't Who Is the jmrly that wanted that cutcken ranch in St. Johns? Put one hundred men on an island where fish is a staple article of sustenance. Twenty f i ve of them catch fish. Twenty five others clean the fish. Twenty-fie cook the fish. Twenty-five hunt fruit and vegetables. So long as every body works there is plenty. All hands are happy. Ten of the allotted fish catchers stop. Ten more dry and hide part of the fish they catch. Five continue to catch fish, but work only part of tho day ut it. Fewer fish going to the kictchen. But tho same number of men insist upon having the same amount of fish. The fifty men who former ly cleaned and cooked the fish have less to do owing to tho un der supply of fish. But they continue to demand food. Grao ually groatcr burdens are laid upon the fruit and vegetables hunters, these insist upon a larger Bharo of fish in return for their arger efforts in gather. ! f Ml tit titwl .
