which all the schools of Portland
competed. Among tho ten re

ready has stowed a considerable
quantity of lumber and is tuk-

sailed and before the Wawaiona
has finished loading, the steamer
Coaxet, which left Kobo for
Portland October 12, will come
to the St. Johns terminal to
discharge a full cargo of hemp
and oriental merchandise. Two

terminal.
As will be noted In the large
announcement elsewhere in this
oaper the Christian church will
open for public service in their
new edifice at Uswego street and
Central avenue, Sunday, Nov
ember 2. The new structure is
an imposing one, conveniently
arranged and splendidly planned.
It is an important addition to St.
Johns, and Dr. H. F. Jones, the
minister, and the congregation
have reason to feel proud of this
superb achievement. It required
indomitable persistence and un
flagging zeal to accomplish it,
and it was largely through Dr.
Jones' untiring energy and opti
mistic perseverence that it was
brought about, and the members
worked faithfully, loyally and
unceasingly. The result is a
handsome and commodious
church edifice.

A drop-kick by Hintt, James
John loft end, from tho 20-yard
ine in -the second period gave
the doublo "J" squad a 3-to 0
victory over tho sturdy Hill
Military academy team Wednes
day afternoon on Multnomah
field. Tho first half of the gamo
was played in a steady down
pour, which soon Boaked tho
ball and players and made the
gridiron soft and treacherous.
Hill came within striking dis
tance of the Saints' goal twice
during the contest, once in the
first period and again in the last
lenod but couldn't put tho ball
across for the marker. James
John had the ball deep in the
Cadet'B territory several times
and three times during the game
tho Hill gridders were forced to
put up a stubborn defense on
their own goal line to keep tho
ball from being shoved across by
the James John backs.
Dick Girt, the double J half
back, came near adding six more
points to his team's score when,
with only a few seconds left to
play in the last period, ho cir
cled right end for a 30-yard run
but stepped out side one foot
from the goal line. The whistle
blew for the enu ot the game
before the teams could line up
for another play. Oregonian.

Between capital and labor
And to do our bit of thinking
Toward their solution.
