Tho Portlnnd began operations on slip 2 Mon day morning, and will probably finish in another two months. Slip No. 1 has 30 feet of water now in its length of 1500 feet and width of 280 fcot. Throe of tho standard sized freighters coming into Portland can now be easily accommodated at the slip. During n portion of tho time, tho dredge was operating on a cut 05 feet high. The Peninsula plant has been closed Fincc October 1. This plant is under government supervision, nnd its finnncing is in tho hands of the United States Emergency Fleet corporation. Tho fleet corporation ordered shipynrds under its control to suspend payment of tho San Francisco wage agreement, whereby tho men wore to receive an increase of 8 cents an hour and the 44 hour week, and be cause of this employes of the Peninsula yard and several of the places struck. Since then the Stnndifer yards in Vancouver hnvo resumed under un agree ment whereby tho additional wage for tho men will bo paid to them just as soon ns the ship ping board pnys tho owners for tho vessels. It is not understood, however, that any such an ar rangement lias been made in this case in respect to the Peninsula yards, and resumption of work on tho part of tho mon will be at tho wugo scale prevailing prior to Octobor 1. Location of a branch factory hero by tho Aladdin Co. of Bny City, Michigan, is predicted as a result of the visitor president and other officials of thu concern to Portland Thursday. Tho in dustry would mean a payroll of from $,10,000 to S50.000 a month and an additional outlet for mil lions of feet of Oregon building woods. The Aladdin Co. oper ates the largest ready-cut house plnnt in the world. This plant and others consume 70,000,000 feet of lumber every year.
