Give Them a Lift Man Entices Little Child1 St. Johns to Get Mill When I'm chugging in my motor, up and down tho country side and behold a weary voter, I remark, "Get in and ride." And he always looks so grateful that, in sooth, I wonder why any man should bo so hateful as to pass a walker by. All day long tho cars go akitting up and down the dusky pike, and few drivors arc inviting weary Pete or foot-sore Mike; and these weary men are heaping curses on the idle rich, as from danger they go leaping to tho bottom of the ditch. "When you'ro riding in your auto, give tho weary jay a lift." Oh, my car is large and roomy, seven delegates 'twill seat, and I call tho pil grims to me, eaying, "Ride and rest your feet." And it fills my heart with gladness, and it makes my boHom glow, when I rescue from their sadness seven delegates or so. In my car I'm trrand and stately, like a monarch on his throne, but I'd loath and hate it greatly if I rode in there alone, whiln a lot of weary fel lows labored in the dust and heat, breathing through their leaky bollowa, weeping o'er their aching foot. I keep saying while I'm skidding in my wagon large and swift, "Selfishness is most forbiddinggive the other chap a lift. "-Walt Mason. A Local Invention A soaring bird was the model which V. W. Huben of St. Johns used in designing a monoplane, which was completed and as sembled at tho Koho CUy I'ark Bpuodway lust week. After two years of effort on the part of tho builder, including careful study of birds, tho machine is ready, and Mr. Huben expects to make a trial flight within a week. The monoplane's wings resemble those of a bird and through a system of control which the in ventor has developed the wings can be tilted backwards or for wards to increimo or lessen thu air pressure and to maintain the balance. Mr. Huben hopes that tho piano can bu driven with less power than the present types of machines demand. Tho machines has never been in flight, but several small models, which the inventor made before beginning construction of tho largo craft, have sailed success fully against tho wind, he states. ADITORIAL. Time Is no respector of customs, sentiment, or precedent. Time sweeps along and in his wake he leaves strewn the ash es of consumed Ideas, the debris resulting from his inevitable clashes with progress, and the remnants and changed aspects of languages and peoples who have tilted with him through the ages, For instance, you immediately think of a woolen or worsted material when one says "Serge," and perhaps at the same time you relate the word "Hluc" with it. Hut con sider. The Italian word Sargia, as well as our word Serge, comes from the old I.atiu word Scrica, this being the femin ine of the word Scrlcus, meaning silken. This in turn was derived from Seres, the ancient name applied to the Chinese. Since China was distinguished then as the "home of silk," so came the meaning "silken," as applied to this word. Therefore, originally, serge was always a silken fabric. So universally are serges made of worsted now, this old original meaning is entirely defeated. ftEGAL SHOES I'vnn Beacon ShOCS For Men- The Deacon Shoes are made iti Manchester, N. II.
