Sparing tho rod docs not
necessarily spoil tho child, ac
cording to the pamphlet iaBued
by tho Parents' Educational
bureau of Portland, which is re
produced In part below. Tho leaf
let is entitled "Stop Whipping
Children," an open letter to
parents.
"Slapping, spankinp;and whip
ping children are very common.
In more barbarous times theio
practices were universal. In
our day inquiry proves that
most parents believe they have
a right to strike children, es
pecially small children. When
punishments aro known to be
extremely severe, neighbors and
officers sometimes intorfero in
behalf of the victims. For ono
such case which becomns public,
there aro hundreds where the
parent is solo judge and wit
ness, and thero is no court of
appeal.
"Any discission of corporal
punishment is ulways to include
tho false statement that 'the
Blblo says, "Sparc tho rod and
spoil the child." ' Tho Bible
concordance contains references
to rods and to whipping. But tho
quotation everybody has heard
und many havo quoted is not
from the Bible, but from Iludi
bras, a humorous poem written
in 1G03 by Samuel Butler.
"Consider tho difference in
size between a parent and a
young child, If a giant 10 or 12
feet tall stood over a man or
woman and dealt out blows for
infractions of giant made rules,
tho parent might realize what
ho now does to children. He
probably does not know cither
tho pain, the physical injury,
the nervous Hliock, the mental
ollccts, nor tho effects upon the
other children In tho family.
rL?2LliaQaaakBaVI
Tho effect upon tho mother or
father is another subject.
"Tho pain is greater than a
grown person realizes. The in
jury to the heart is sometimes
permanont. Tho nervous effects
are such that tho same child
frequently offends again with
in an hour. Feelings of bitter
ncss, hatred and even revenge
rankle in the heart. The fear
in the mind of the victim and
of tho other children is wholly
bad. Paternal control that is
wise and good cultivates a
child's self respect, as well as
respectful of parents. Whipping
is destructive of self respect."

Is it Possible to Legislate
life and Brains?
Swift & Company is
primarily an organization
of men, not a collection
pf brick, mortar, and
machinery.
Packing Plants, their
equipment and useful
ness are only outward
symbols of the 'intelli
gence, life - long experi
ence, and right purpose
of the men who compose
the organization and of
those who direct it.
Will not Government direc
tion of the packing industry,
now contemplated by Congress,
take over the empty husk of
physical property and equipment
and sacrifice the initiative, ex
perience and devotion of these
men, which is the life itself of
the industry?
What legislation, what politi
cal adroitness could replace such
life and brains, once driven out?
Let us send you a Swift "Dollar."
It will interest you.

Cinderella Feet
We are displaying a table of ox-.
fords that were made before the
era of leather substitutes and ex
tremely pointed toes but they are
not such out-of-date shoes after
all. But to have them fit, you
must wear not larger than a size
four; there are many pairs of
sizes three and three and a half,
a good many fours and a few
fives. If you have the undersized
foot you may have a pair of these
perfectly good, substantial and
nice looking low shoes foi' $1.00.
And you will not delay for many
pairs have been sold simply be
cause they are in evidence in our
store.

Our Policy of Markup
There Is a lot to be said about the
markup ol uterchandiic just at this
time. You may be lured by "Special
Sales' and that may be policy pro
viding you ore a good buyer and know
values nnd confine yourself to the
'Specials." Dutlf you ore wise you
will take this tip and avoid the stores
Hint arc making the new arrivals at
"replacement values' intlicr than on
the Purchase Valuts; and most of them
nrc doing it. The larger business or
ganizations particularly. It is worth
the price to divulge a business secret
occasionally and wc would have you
believe us when we define our Policy
of Markup. Most all goods, particu
larly shoes, that will boon our shelves
this fall and winter, have been bought
for several mouths; sonic weeks before
the real skyrocketing ( rcv.illcd, Wc
arc going to sell our shoes and prac
tically all of our merchandise that
wc were fortunate enough to buy
early, at a markup based on the price
paid and not on the price wc would
pay if buying on the present market;
which in the case of men's shoes
means from one to four dollars n pair;
women's shoes about the same and
misses and children's almost as bad
In proportion.
White Skirts
The season of White Dress
Skirts is well advanced and finds

hand that ought to be on the per
son of our patrons. In the en
deavor to close these out so that
funds will be available for the
fall lines wo are offering them at
substantial reductions, and these
were never marked at "replace
ment prices." We are als.o show
ing the nifty Stylefit Skirts in Silk
Poplins of Navy Tan, and Taupe
and Silk Plaids. To go with these i
Sjyrls we offer you a selection of
Blouses that compare in appear
ance and "materials with those

ces that exceed ours materially.
