The ice cream social hold in the Congregational church Tues day evening was a fine success. A pleasing musical program was rondercd and an enjoyable even ing was had. Peterson left Monday morning for White Salmon, Wash., to look after his apple orchard, after which ho will spend some time in the harvest lields of hastern Washington. This bid was $82,000 lowor than their previous proposal. This project s an important one and the Council is to he commendod for gotting it under way. The annual picnic of the W. C. T. U. will be held at Colum bia park next Monday, July 7th. Those wishing to go with the crowd will be ut tho St. Johns Hardware store at 10:45. Bring unch and cuns and lemons. Everybody welcome. The Portland Settlement Con- ter Mission Sunday School of the M. E. church, under the supervision of Miss Davis, superintendent, and Mrs.Mellin- ger, assistant superintendent, held their annual picnic June 21th. at Columbia Park. The day was one of Oregon's best and about 50 children were seat ed at a table filed with delicious cats, such as any Sunday School would be proud to serve. Two hours later a large can of ice cream was opened and served. t was an inspiration to see the smiles. Joy and gladness beam ed from the little faces as Miss Davis passed the ice cream cones, the conduct of these children speaks well for theBe workers who are laboring with out thought of self or sacrifice or the upbuilding of Christ's Kingdom in this little corner of the vineyard where he has per- mitten tneir laitnim service. St. Johns is the ban ner church in this great work in the Portland district. It went over tho top first and farthest of all the churches.
