was defeated by Benson Tues
day, May G. by a score of 17 to
6. John Ohm, not being able
to play, "Larry" Johnson was
nut behind the bat. "Tom"
Trumbull was Bick, Lee IIos
kins took his nlnce at short. In
the fourth inning the score was
four to four, but before the
tramo was over, Benson had
brouirht in thirteen scores to
James John's two. The absence
of two regular men weakened
the team seriously. Benson
won by better playing. How
ever, James John has a reputa
tion for playing to the finish.
There are victories ahead.
The annual Hi-Jinx, which
was conducted along the lines
of the county fairs of the past,
was given Friday evening, May
2, at the high school building,
with much vigor and pep. Dur
ing the week, posters were hung
through the school halls to ad
vertise the stunts, nnd Friday
aftornoon the people of St. Johns
were interested onlookers at an
advertising parade of strange
beings who claimed fellowship

ents. A big crowd attended
the Hi-Jinx, and the expression
on their faces indicated a thor
ough going good time. The
Liliurlv girls in a beautiful
booth, sold candy and lemonade.
Amusement was provided by
fortune tellers, clowns, Hula
dancers and original farces.
Tho "Belles of Sunny brook
Farm" created much laughter,
especially with Porky Chatter
ton and Stanley O'Connor as the
chief feminino characters; very
much guessing went on as to the
indeiility of the various belles.
"My Stars," an original farce
by the eight termers; was one of
thu line productions of tho even
ing. The Maypole dance was
beautifully done by the Fresh
man girls. A striking event of
the Qvening wiih the dramatiza
tion of several popular songs, by
the third termors. Gulliver's
travels thru local communities
was one of the cleverest pro
diictions of the evening, do mi in

teachers are going to other cities
that pay better salaries, and in-

There is a shortage of good
teachers in Portland. Many
teachers who are not qualified to
secure regular positions are now,
teaching in the Portland schools. t

land teachers' salaries has de-1

St Johns on the Map
We went to Salem last week to be present at a hearing before the
State Bank Board considering an application for a Bank Charter.
The promoter who made the plea is a stranger to most of us, but
to hear him recite his prophecy of prosperity that is coming to your
own St. Johns was something of a surprise to even those of us who
have always Boosted. To know Manhattan Island and then to
mount the hills across from St. Johns and look down upon the
Peninsula; it does not ta e the eye of an engineer to see the similar
ity of topography. To visit the St. Johns Terminal and see the car
go going to the Orient is just a mere glimpse of what is coming to
the great North West during the Americanizing of trade with the
millions over there. And why should not the trade pass through
St. Johns. To contemplate the Oriental Trade is to contemplate the
Factory Sites of St. Johns covered with the smoke stacks; with fac
tories and mills; to contemplate the beautiful setting covered with
homes of those who will be a part of this Bee Hive of Industry.
And for the immediate future: who should question the prosperity
of the next year with the crops the greatest in our history. This
space is given over to this subject because we are all apt to forget
the good things close to us, and we wish to go on record as a party
to the upbuilding of our surroundings. We invite you all to join
our optimism. '
