It is now assured that Greeley
street will be improved, as the
cost for this improvement is
contained in the budnet adopted
by the County Commissioners,
and will be done at county ex
pense. Thero is apparently no
jjood reason why the work
should not bo done by the coun
ty. Determined attempts have
been mado in the past to carry
this improvement through at the
expense of property owners, and
assessment districts were laid
out with this idea in view. But
objections were raised and re
monstrances were filed; the bur
den seemed too Kreat, and (he
asBCSBment district as proposed
seemed too inequitable. So after
Bovornl years of patient, until -tag
eiTort, the promoter) of this
projoct found their labor una
vailing, and it was decided to
invoko the aid of Multnomah
county. .Success at last has
crowned their elforls and that

tho whole county will benefit by
the improvement. Tho Greeley
street extension will extend
this thorough fare to the iiroad
way bridge, giving practically u
direct route to Cortland proper
and, it is Hiiid. reducing tin
time in making the run by trol

improvement will be completer
next year. Its value to the low
ro peninsula will bo inestimable.
