regard to the Chautauqua.

The event this year promises
to far exceed that of lust year in

The W.S. S. drive in St.Johns
has been proving very success-
ul. and in only a very few in
stances have the various com
mittees that have been waiting
upon our people been turned
down. This district is in
charge of Commissioner A. A.
Muck, with the following cap
tains working under his gener
al supervision: J. S. Mckinney,
A.W.Davis, Rev. A. P. Layton,
r. oillmore. Koy H. Knowles.
W. M.Tower and F. A. Rice. It
is pleasing to note that the citi
zens of St. Johns are doing
their bit in W. S. S.. as in all
other patriotic campaigns. St.
Johns can always be depended
upon to do its full share toward
furthering the cause of Liberty,

The hearing of the Columbia
Slough closing project before
Coionel Hinn Tuesday morning
was well attended and the case
arirued from its various angles.
The Port of Portland Commis
sion. which has jurisdiction over
the Slough, is making an exten
sivo investigation into the en
tire matter, and Colonel Ainn
announced that no decision will
be reached by tho war depart-
menk until a report first is re
ceived from this commission.
Petitions protesting against
the nronosed closing of the
Slough will be circulated in St.
Johns, and it in expected that all
citizens of the Lower Peninsula
especially will append their
signature thereto.
