THE ST. JOHNS REVIEW A. W. Mnrklc, Ktlltor ' Published Every Frlda Subiorlptlon price $1.00 per year. TiiU RKV1KW Is entered nt jxjst office hi Portland, Ort'KOU, us mull mattut of the second class under the Act of Con reteof March 3, 1879. The Portland Journnl scored a point over tho Evening News the past week. For several days the News had been boasting and daringly telling its readers what a wonderfully low bid it was going to make on publish ing the delinquent tax list in order to save . the unfortunate ones n pot of money. When tho bids were opened, it was found that the Journal bid wua 30 cents per inch, while the boast ed News bid was 40c per inch. Were the Review eligible to bid, it would gladly have taken the contract at 25 cents per inch. Concerning the "graft saving" bid of the Ncwh the Journal states: "In its issue Tuesday ovening tho News announced that it would bid and bid so low thaf'this delinquent tax graft" would bo made "so microscopic that it won't bo worth tho can dle." Tho tender of the News ia not consistent with its utter ance. The 1018 rate card shows that this paper makes a mini mum rate of !M cents an inch to largo commercial advertiserw on long contracts. According to tho same rato card, an advertls or using one-third us much space as will bo occupied by tho delin quent tax list would pay the same rule, '10 cents a column inch, that tho News will charge the county."
