McKeon. after Bnond- ing some time in St. Johns, has returned to Ecola, Oregon, where he will probably remain for the ba ance of the Winter. While here he aided Uncle Sam in rendering his services at the I ship plant. E. S. Conway, a laborer em ployed in the Grant Smith-Por-tcr-Guthrie ship building plant here, died nt St. Vincent's hos pital Tuesday morning ut 8:15 o'clock. Mr. Conway fell 30 feet from tho scatlolu on which he was working and suffered n irnctured skuii and broken shoulder Monday mornintr. He is survived by his wife, who resides at No. 140 East Forty- seventh street. The Legal Advisory Hoard meets between the hours of 7 and top. m. in the local city hall, where all desiring assistance in answering the questions in their Questionnaires may call in the evenings. Lester Hart and wife, of Los Angeles, Cal., recently arrived here and Mr. Hart has secured employment at the Foundation Shipbuilding plant. Mrs. Hart is the sister of Mrs. uoy Gar- lick. On Sunday the parents of Mrs. uarlick and her youngest brother und sister also arrived from Los Angeles and will make rortland their perman ent home. All had their Christ mas dinner with Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Garlick. K. C. Couch was agreeably surprised the first of the week, when his brother. R. C. Couch, and wife of Guthrie Center, Iowa, arrived at the Couch home. The two brothers had not seen each other for 22 years, and tho meeting 01 tho two once more was most pleas ing to each. Since machinery orders have been placed and delivery cannot be made rapidly from the East at present, it is estimated there will be abundance time if con struction of the yard is not un dertaken for 30 days. So the site feature may rest until the latter part of this week, says the Portland Daily Abstract. That another big steel ship yard is to be established in this district, and that contracts were being negotiated have already been secured from the govern ment for 40 steel steamers, re presenting $25,000,000 and that the Smith & Watson Iron Works is behind the project, is the in formation contained in a re port Saturday from apparently reliable sources. While officials 01 the bmith & Watson com pany categorically deny there is anything to the report, other information is to the effect the Plans for straightening the Columbia slough from tho Wil lamette river to the Columbia river and dredging a channel 200 feet wide and 14 or more feet deep the entire distance, for the purpose of utilizing it as a commercial highway and for drainage of the entire pen insula have been outlined by City Engineer Laurgaard. Es timated cost of the project is $1,000,000. It is proposed that the federal government, the state government and the pro perty affected bear the cost. Muck reports that the St. Johns drive for Red Cross membership made the best showing of any district in Portland, more than 2200 hav ing enrolled and more coming in right along.
