THE ST. JOHNS REVIEW A. V. Mnrklc, Udltor Published Evory Friday At 1 17 1'hlladclphlft street, Portland, Or. Subiorlptlon nrloa $1.00 par year. For Sale PETITION Is entered at post office Oregon, as timll matter Tint Rkvirw Ill luillttliu, uri'KUU, of tile second class under the Act of Con gress of March 3, 1879. A cood resolution for all busi ness men to make at the first of the coming year is to positively decide that they will during the entire year run an adver tisement in the St. Johns Re view. It Has been agreed unon by the leading business men of the country that every business man. to get the best results, should expend two nor cent of his gross receipts in advertis ing. If every merchant in St. lonns snouiu do tins, wnnt a busy business place it would become. The leading stores of Portland spend two or more per cent of their receipts in adver tising. That is the reason they are leading stores. Their two per cent in advertising draws trade from those places where the local merchants refuse or neglect to spend two per cent in t Peninsula Security Co, uuiongs ncre 00 your mi oy lay ing aside two per cent for ad vortising. The result will amaze. If two per cent is too strong to take at first, try one per cent. Advertising takes much trade to Portland and ad vertising in rebuttal will keep it here. Advertising is the key note of success, and oftimc3 is the diirercnce between success and failure. Start the New Year right. Plan your now year advertising early. 1 TWO NEW MODERN 5-ROOM BUNGALOWS Easy Terms On Payments Mortgage Loans, and Insurance 1 First National Dank Building The crying need of the hour still seems to be more houses in St. .Johns for tenant purposes. It is really pathetic to have peo ple come into this olllcc, as they do (juito frequently, and say that they have made the rounds of the real estate olllcos ann followed down every "clue" i I 1 1 I t , a . t mm nun tuey nati intimation 01 in an endeavor to find suitable habitation. Wearied and dis couraged in their search, they come to the Review ollico as a "last resort." Hut wo are just as much at sea. We do not S ffVX To Whom it May Concern runted lor iiouBcicccping pur poses at the present time. Were the houses available it is safe to say that the population of St. Johns would be doubled IiibIiIo of one year. Routs havu gone up quite rapidly, somu modern houses renting lor $22,fj0 per month, which is good interest 011 the investment. The only solution seems to be for those wanting houses to build them thuniHolves. Land may still be purchased at a reasonable rate, and building material iu probab ly iih low in price at present iih it will be for several years to come. If overy owner of a vacant lot in St. .lonna would arrange to havo a dwelling oructod thereon, it would relievo the tension immeasurably and at the same time prove a'prolit able investment. It is said to In; no dilficult matter to secure funds for building purposes when the lot is clear of debt.
