THE ST. JOHNS REVIEW A. VV. Mnrlclc, Kdltor l'ubllnhod Eyorr Friday Al 117 Philadelphia street, Portland, Or. Subsorlptlon prloe $1.00 par year Tint KKVIKW l entered at postoffit In Portland. Oreeon, as mail mntter ol the second class under the Act of Con ,-rcssol March j, 1879. "1 don't setup to be u judge of riRlit nnd wrong in men; I've lost the trail sometimes my- solf and may get lost again, So when I see a man Who looks as though he'd gone astray, 1 want to shove my hand in his and help him find the way." 1 Politicians arc queer animals. Thoy burn up coal, withdraw oil lands, prevent development of water power and in the same breath howl about fuel shortage while refusing to pass legisla tion permitting utilization of millions of water horse power now running to waste.--Ex. 1 Kvoryono who can possibly do so should procure Liberty bonds. Besides being a good solid investment, their purchase will be of inestimable value to this good old government of ours. In helping the govern ment you are at the same lime helping yourself. Huy a Liber ty Bond. The repair of .Jersey street is very slow in getting under way, and in the meantime the advantage to be gained from this glorious weather in mak ing the repair is being lost. If it is the purpose to have repair? made this year, is it certain that no further time should be lost. , Ambassador Gerard's address in Portland only accentunted the great responsibility of thin country in the great Kuropoan conflict. lie made it very plain that man power will be the real deciding factor in bringing about a victory, and that the necessity ol more ships was mirnt vital. The object of his .'isit here seemed to be to arouse the people to a more vivid realization of the fact that our resources and man iiowiir, perhaps to the limit, will bo needed to bring the war to a victorious conclusion. The Portland Ad Club has do moiistratod the fact that fish may be brought to Portland nut sold at prices ranging below one half of what the retail merchants charge. Hcsidcr making expenses the Club real i'.ed a profit of $150 the first week of its venture, when mon than .20. 000 pounds of fish wcr( 'disposed of. It is expected that the city will tako this mar kttt over and continue the salt of fish at practically cost. This iuxtanco is u fair demonstration of the saving to the consumer when the midldcman's profit and other profits are removed. The Ad Club, however, had one advantage over the retailer, in that no rent was paid and fish was Mold only as a whole or cut in half, and all sales were for cash, with no delivery ser vice involved. If it could lit ho arranged that the city could act as middleman on a large number of commodities and fruits and vegetables, buying direct from the producer and furnishing same to the retailers al cost, undoubtedly the con sumer would largely benefit. Hy a practical adjustment of things, thoro is no reason for the middleman's oftimes enor mouit profits.
