Deportment in Public The following interesting and instructive paper was read by Miss Kathryn Scott at the Mothers' meeting oftthe W. C. T. U. Subject "Deportment in Public, and Why Girls Do Not Like Housework:" The following quotation from Rusk in seemed to be appropri ate. He is giving advice to young women and says, "First.be sure of one thing, that however much you may know and what ever advantage you may pos sess and however good you may be, you have not been singled out b.V the God who made .vou. from all the other girls in the world, to be espec ially informed and qualified. The second thing which you may be sure of is, that however good you may be, you have faidts: that however dull you may be, you can lind out what some of them are; that however slight they may be, you hail bet ter make some, not too painful, but patient effort to get rid of them." For instance, can wo not learn a little moreV"self- restraint when others arc talk- inir. so that wo may cure what is really a national habit, that of interrupting. Watch any group and see how rare is a good listener; how rare is that supremo of all courtesiesto lot anotherHalk without inter rupting. Most of us arc utter ly unconscious of the manner in winch wo reiuse to allow an other to talk and finish what is being said without inlerrup lion. And yet there is not a more beautiful form of courtesy that permits another to speak and llnish before we begin. And by the same token is there notli ing more inconsiderate.more die tinctly rude, than to break into another's talk and take from another the opportunity which is his or hers. Next to what we wear, wo show our inmost solves more truly by our behav ior in conversation than in any other contact in life. It is the man or woman of (hie instinct. of a regard for the nicoty of an occasion, who permits an other to finish what he has started to say, who exercises that self control that stamps the person of gentle birth and does not interrupt. A regard for appearances is, and should lie, a leading con Midoraiton wneu ordering our conduct in public. It is not onough that we know ourselves to be above reproach; we must take care that the stranger win) iiiisiTvuB us gum no nil nroHsion to the contrary. p minis who jenow her frresis limy nun h I ui disposition, may oxcuse the girl who laughs boisterously gn the street car; but she will not be able to ex plain to the severe looking slrnnxer opposite that she did not do this to attract atten lion. Conduct in public should 1)B eharnetomod by reserve. tii'ODtings between acoua in tnttces should bo quiet ami con volitional. Homemlier to al ways be kind. SoWhIiiiohh is vulgar, and an untailing habit to consider other people's com fort is mark of gentle breeding. A lady should say "Thank you," to a gentleman who gives up a seat to nor on a street car or other public conveyance, where, having paid for a seat, he has a rlirlit to it. and his voluntary relinquishment of it is a matter of personal courtesy on his part. l.ul all bear in mind that is is impossible to be a lady, or a gentleman without gentle man nor. The best comrade for a girl is her mother. One of the most pitiable things in life is that so many young people do not up precinte their mothers at their full until they havo left them. If thoir fresh minds could only bsliove that experience rea Iv brings mothers more up to date than thoy can possibly bo and could realixe what a real help and what a vital part their mothers might piny in their livus. "If a girl behaves her self as she should no liberties will bo taken." 1 cannot help thinking that it is the mothers mainly who have kept up this old tradition. I believe most inothora who are careful of tuoir daughters, teacli them that thoy can havo pretty much tho kind of behavior they want from a man, but it is not one mother out of ten, I am sure. who instills into her sons from the beginning that he can have tho kind of behavior he wants from a girl nnd sees to it with an nor soui mat no wants on y JktuiJ viuniiiii una llllll 11 inn jjt'll on that alio should behave so as to command it, but how does it come that so little is said to tho son of the country about self rospoct. Some parents we find who shirk their responsibility uy saying -on, nines nave so changoi' since 1 was young. young people have more liber ties those days." Hut such should not be the case. Hotli the son's and daughter's moral standard should be given by fathor and mothor; it is for them to oxplain and direct; and iugt in so far as tho young Uesnjg adhoro or dopart from jt, just so for do they reflect their father and mother's abil ity or inability as parents. The parents are on trial, not the times and conditions. The ideal is that between daughter and mothers there shall be patience and love and that sympathy which follows a generous and mutual sharing of interests. To bo concluded next week.
