No other suburb of Port land can show anything like it, and many cities several times the population does not have nearly so large a pay roll. Cigarettes by the million are being sent to the soldiers. Why not send pipes or cigars in stead? Cigarettes arc hard on I the nerves, much more so than tobacco in any other form. Many may be induced to become cigarette fiends in these dona tions that otherwise would not acquire the pernicious habit. 1 1 ' Why would it not be a good plan to build air ships on the Coast where the spruce lumber is available, rather than cut the lumber here and then ship it East for manufacture into air ships? After the ships would bo constructed and fully rigged out on the Coast, they could be sailed through the air to their destination, thus saving freight and furnishing experience in operation at the same lime. Tho distress ing thing about this frank Mtntomt'iit is that in the main it mooiiih true. It is time the Kovornment intervened. Tho government is dealing stern ly with the slacker. So, Mr. Hoover, do not stop at tho price of wheat. Look well after the price of Hour. Do not prevent the far mum from getting an execs sivo price for their wheat and then permit tho mill men to charge us much as they please for Hour. It might he well to go oven as far as the linker, and forbid him to charge more than a reasonable profit in making broad. Regulating the price of wheat is not Kiilllcient. 1 William .1. Bryan, in the last issue of his Commoner, proves thnt ho is "true blue." Ho hiU the nail squarely ron the head, and sums up the situation hi a nutshell: "Baforc our nation enters a war it is perfectly proper to dis miss the wisdom of going to war, but the discussion is closed when congress acts. After that no one should be permitted to oloak attacks on tho government or aid to the enemy under tho claim that he is exercising free- dom or speech. No sympathy, thorefore, will be wasetd upon thoso who have been arrestee! for unpatriotic utterances. They abuse free speech. And this applios to attack on the allies as well as to attack upon the United States. We can no more allow our allies to be crushed than we can allord to bo crush leading and most cnjoyablo fea tures, and that was a solo by Mrs. Gabriel I'ullcn, which was rendered in a most pleasing manner. Miss Nettie Loona I'oy accompanied her singing on the organ in her usual splen did style. o After a brief and severe Ill ness of a few days, Charlie Ells worth Goarche, tho eight year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Albort Goarche, of 1011 North Leon ard street, died Tuesday, Aug ust 14, The funeral service was conducted at the Methodist ciiurcn by ev.
