THE ST. JOHNS REVIEW A. W. MARKLE - Published Every Friday At 117 West Burlington Btroot, Tub Rkvikw la entered at post office In Saint Johns, Oregon, us mall matter of the second class unacr me aci oi (.on gtttt of March 3, 1879. Subscription prloa $1.00 per year A decided weakness of the Pa cific northwest is its lack manufacturing enterprise. Its productive resources in other lines arc being too larcely ex nended in eastern centers for the purchase of commodities that could bo just as well produc ed at home. Wo depend upon the factories and the labor of far distant cities to provide ua th intra we murht just .as we provide for ourselves. Oppor tunities for investment in in dustrinl lines are beinir newlect cd while our money Roes to keep nhve the fires in eastern mills Our workmen lack employment while wo arc supporting the payrolls in cities so far away we Bcarcely know of thnm. Here is a fertile field for the activities of commercial bodies and ind viduuls interested in the deve onment of the west. It is Bafc to say that there are openings here for not less than a half thousand new industries. Not million dollar concerns, subs dized with issues of stocks and bonds or Inriro donations to bur dn the communities, but sma industries where opportunities for dove onment are irrcat. We should create an industria atmosphere. Wo should be lib oral in spirit toward capita seeking investment, throiiRl minimizing tho retarding inllu ence of legislation and anlago niatic requirement!. Which made manufacturing operations difli cult. Tho nearer production and consumption aro brought to gother tho greater iienciit wil accrue to each, Husiness, cspe chilly largo business, should, of courso, bo under proper super vision. business recognizes this, and desires it. but super vision should not bo carried to a point where it is too burdensome to permit proiitaulo return. Commercial organizations tho small towns of tho north west, equally with thoso in tho cities, can profitably turn thei attention toward securing am promoting industrial enterprises, I'ny rolls aro needed. 'Iho pay roll district is tho prosperous district. Tho tin bucket brigade is a great promoter of prosper oils communities. Tho north west needs a larger tin bucket brigade Frco I'rcss, Cheney Wash. A doctor, commenting on the hcalthfulncHs of kissing, staler that, though many hoalth reasons have been given why one shoulc not indulge in a kiss, little has been heard on tho other side, "Tho main health reason," ho said "is that it acts like magic in soothing down irritable nerves. Take, for instance, if, on arriving home, you find your wifo's tempor rather high. prompt and affectionate kiss wil dispel it, and at tho same time save you from a norvo racking Mrs. Caudlo lecture across tho tea table. Again, one of tho children is peevish. A mother's kiss horo will more often than not soothe down the child's nerves. A kiss acts in some pe culiar way on our nervous sys tern, and it involuntarily re sponds by making us chcorful. A kiss, when installed in bed. will send tho children off into tho pleasant sloop, and if dreams come thoy will bo pleasant rather than horrihlo and gloomy. wx. Tho man who wields n pick and shovel looks with envy upon tho leilow citizen who emerges from tho ollico of n big commer cial or financial institution, well dressed and prosperous looking. It is becauso he judges by out ward appearanco that tho well tailored man is happier than ho. Tho man with tho shovel goes homo with aching muscles, but ho goes home to cat with an ap petttu that all tho art of tho world cannot give tho other, and to enjoy sleep that renews his strength as no hypnotic drug could give tho other, Tho man of irrcnt business responsibili ties cannot lay them aside at tho door of his ollico. His digestion is impaired. His nervous sys tern cannot bo let down from its high tension in a moment. His nights aro often more exhausting than his days. Tho sum of hu man life is not computed in items of outward appearanco. Tho resignation of Bryan from tho Cabinet seems to be tho best thing ho could have done under the circumstances, since ho and tho President could not agree. Timo only will tell which was right in their opinions., but both are undoubtedly honest in their views. Tho greatness of Bryan is again demonstrated. Many men less great would have revised their views to conform with those of the president rather than lose tho high office Mr, Bryan occupied. It is confidently believed, however, that tho policy pursued by Presi dent Wilson will result in this country remaining at peace, Before a bank can get a charter and become a National Bank it must SATISFY THE U.S. GOVERN MENT at Washington that all of the provisions of the Natiional Banking Laws have been complied with, Tho name and place of residence of each Director must also be given, all facts necessary to determine whether they are lawfully entitled to commence the business of banking must be SWORN UNDER OATH.
